I just had to comment on this recipe. These are really good and best when eaten with Tomato Soup. Yummy.

Can you believe this recipe has been on AR for 6 years and people are still actively commenting on it? It's wonderful! I personally never knew how to make a GC: I had to order it from delis to enjoy this favorite of mine. Thank you for the posting! I can't wait to try out the variations listed here. We beginners need all the help we can get! (Where is that "how to boil water" recipe, btw?) ;-)

My ultimate grilled cheese sandwich is a slice of Tillamook Sharp cheddar between two slices of Dave's Killer Bread (if I didn't have Dave's, I'd use another hearty, nutty or seedy whole wheat bread). I spread unsalted, organic butter on the outside of the slices and sprinkle them with garlic powder. If I have any tomatoes in my garden, I will throw in a few slices. I serve it up with some high quality tomato soup (such as Imagine fire roasted tomato bisque). It's so easy, and so delicious.

Thank you. It makes me happy that people have taken this as an opportunity to post variations and basic recipes. People tend to forget that some of us are beginners and need ideas. ;)

For a nice crunchy version, bake this beauty in an oven at 350 until golden brown. Gives the bread a crouton texture... I also use Gouda cheese which is a rich version of American... Yum!

I have made this recipe a hundred times yet, only found it on the site today. An oldie but a goody. Even though every kid in Home Ec makes it, it's still worth posting and rating. Cheers for the good ol' standbys. :o)

We always spread a small amount of apple butter on top of the cheese. Has just a slight sweet flavor.

A timeless classic. One tip I learned along the way -- a book recommended shredding the cheese(s), instead of slicing. You get a better melt. Not necessary, but a thoughtful suggestion.

This is exactly how I make my grilled cheese sandwiches. Add a slice or two of deli lunch meat if you want more than cheese.

An old faithful recipe when you need a snack or just don't feel like fixing dinner. I used 2 slices of American cheese on each sandwich. Mmmmm good!

Like others, I occasionally use different cheeses like provalone or mozzerella. My husband also likes to put garlic powder on the butter before you fry it!
