Greek Pasta and Beef
SUBMITTED BY:
Dorothy Bateman
"This delightfully different casserole gives everyday macaroni and cheese an international flavor. A co-worker who's a pro at Greek cooking shared the recipe years ago. It brings raves whenever I serve it. -Dorothy Bateman, Carver, Massachusetts"

DIRECTIONS
Cook macaroni according to package directions. In a large skillet, cook beef, onion and garlic over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Stir in the tomato sauce, water and seasonings. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Drain macaroni.
In a large bowl, combine the macaroni, egg and Parmesan cheese; set aside. For sauce, in a large saucepan, melt butter; stir in flour and cinnamon until smooth. Gradually add milk. Bring to a boil over medium heat; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until slightly thickened. Remove from the heat. Stir a small amount to hot mixture into eggs; return all to pan, stirring constantly. Stir in cheese.
In a greased 3-qt. baking dish, spread half of the macaroni mixture. Top with beef mixture and remaining macaroni mixture. Pour sauce over the top. Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees F for 45-50 minutes or until bubbly and heated through. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.

It was...moderately good. The macaroni had a distinctly greasy taste to it, and any actual taste it had wasn't too strong. I did halve the recipe since only three people would be eating it, but that should have kept the proportions right for all the flavors to still come through.

Tasty comfort food. Not the healthiest with all the butter and egg which is the reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 4, but a nice winter meal. I added about 1/2 cup of finely diced carrot to the meat/onion mixture and also sprinkled some chopped fresh spinach leaves before the final sauce layer. The carrot and spinach added some color and extra nutrition and did not change the taste at all. Final note, I found some of the directions a little confusing but worked it out. Good luck.

Yummy, I made this tonight and it was delicious. The kids hated the smell though, lol - must have been the nutmeg(?). I've never added nutmeg and cinnamon to hamburger before...but it was a delightful mixture of flavors and yummy. Everyone ate it up! The sauce gets crusty on top but expect it to be gooey underneath, that surprised me as I thought it would be more pastry or cake like...but it was cheesier...yummy.

My husband liked this recipe, I thought it would be a little more flavorful. Maybe add more sauce to it? I'm not sure.

Very good taste and nice and big for a family dinner or gathering. You can also use a 9 x 13 glass dish in place of the 3 quart casserole.
