I loved this recipe! I substituted the 1 cup raisins for 1/2 cup dried cranberries and 1/2 cup dried apples. I added 1 tsp nutmeg, 1 tablespoon of vanilla and 2 tablespoons of caramel sprinkles. It was absolutely heavenly!! It was almost a cross between a biscuit and a cookie! My mother who adamantly proclaimed that she "does not like scones", loved it as well! I can't wait to try a couple of variations with a more savory twist!

I made a orange-cranberry version and it was AMAZING! Added orange zest, dried cranberry, and vanilla. I was a little worried when everyone said not to overwork the dough so I panicked a bit when it turned out really dry and crumbly so I added a little OJ into it (about 1/4 cup) and it MADE these scones pop! Also, My dad is diabetic so I made them sugar free (with diabeti sweet)and everyone who had them couldn't even tell! Going to try savory next time . . . can't wait!

I made a slew of these for my daughter's Kappa Epsilon faculty tea at Duquesne University. I froze them after they were cut and she baked them a week later for the occasion! She said they disappeared and she got rave reviews from both faculty and friends. This recipe is truly a keeper and one that our family will continue to enjoy year after year.

This is the best scone recipe I have found! I was using Pillsbury take and bake scones in my coffeehouse, so my customers were used to really cake-like supersweet scones. I started making artisan scones using this recipe as the base. I did add 1/2 cup of sugar, as the scones weren't quite sweet enough. Chocolate Chips Scones - Add vanilla to sour cream mixture and use mini choc chips. Orange-Cranberry - Add 1.5 Tbsp orange extract to sour cream mixture, zest of one orange to dry mixture and 2 c. craisins. Almond,Cherry, White Chocolate - add 1/2 stick of almond paste, grated, 2 c. dried cherries and 1/4 bag white chocolate chips, chopped to dry ingredients, Lemon-Blueberry - add 2 TBSP lemon extract to sour cream mixture and 2 c. blueberries and zest of one lemon to dry mixture, Apple Cinnamon - Add 3 TBSP cinnamon and 2 c. chopped apples coated in cinnamon/sugar mix to dry ingredients. Top all scones with egg wash and demarara sugar, except apple cinnamon, mix cinnamon with demarara sugar and top.

I've made this recipe 3 times now and it has turned out every single time. I omit the raisins b/c I'm just not a huge fan of them. I also like to make Alton Brown's Donut Glaze and dunk them in the glaze to make a scone just like the Vanilla Scones they sell at Starbucks.

This was our first try at making scones- and guess what, we thought these scones were awsome! We made a few mistakes along the way... but now we now how to make the scones just fine. We made a few changes: we put in choc. chips instead of raisins because we are not big fans of them in scones. Hope this review helped you! - Emma & Sierra

I was a little nervous at first to try something like this but I'm glad I did. It gets easier every time I make them. I like them with cinnamon, vanilla, and cinnamon chips. My kids like them too.

These are good. I had never eaten a scone before I made these. I made them with the Devonshire Cream on this site. I was thrilled by how well they turned out. A simple basic recipe that is easy to alter according to what you want for the day, like fruit or chips. I was pleasantly surprised that they were chewy rather than hard.

Healthy alternative: I used whole wheat flour, reduced the sugar to 2/3 cup, added 2 tsp almond extract, sliced almonds, dark chocolate chips and dried cherries. Delicious!

I just made these and they are wonderful! I can tell I will have to make another batch. These were slightly crisp on the outside and light and wonderful on the inside. I used cranberries instead of raisins and added some orange flavoring, and I did not even bother to make the glaze. My husband who has always said that he doesn't like scones says these are delicious! I am planning on making the next batch with lemon flavoring and some frozen blueberries. Thanks for the recipe.

WOW! Didn't have enough sour cream so substituted 1/3 cup buttermilk to make up the difference. Used currants instead of raisins and before baking, brushed with butter and sprinkled raw sugar on top for a little crunch. I patted this into 2 rounds instead of one, cut each into eights to make 16 instead of 8 scones. Delicious! Can't wait to try with dried cranberries!

I can hardly believe how good these are! This recipe definitely 16 instead of 12, but if youe want HUGE scones - make 12! I added 2 tsp cinnamon and 1 cup chopped pecans, then eggwashed the top and sprinkled cinnamon/sugar. So good!

These were really delicious! My kids ate them all up quickly. I did leave out the raisins since my kids don't like them instead I used apples and added cinnamon. I did mess it up a bit but it was my fault since I added the apples I think I should have adjusted the wet ingredients or added more flour because I could not form it into wedges so I just dropped them on a cookie sheet. Thanks for the recipe.

These were delicious. First off I was a little scared when they were baking. dough was very sticky and some of the butter seeped out, but when they were done they were fluffy and had a nice crispy sweet crust on the bottom. I put milk on top and then dusted with sugar before baking and it left a wonderful crackly sugar crust. no need for a glaze. also added frozen blueberries. terrific. going to try other fruits as well.

My family loves this recipe and I am often asked to make them for events. If I am not adding frozen fruit (which makes the dough moist) I add a bit of milk (1-2 Tbls)to the dough. This makes the scones softer.
