Well worth the time and effort. Very rich, pour over cooked rice.

Awesome recipe! First review ever, but this was so good I feel I have to express how delicious it was. It wasn't quite as thick as I was expecting it to be but I'm glad. I used beef broth from a smoked brisket, probably added some good flavor. Also baked the roux in the oven to make it easier. Never tried this method, takes a bit longer, but worked wonders! No burning.

I've been in search for a great gumbo recipe and this is IT! We gobbled this up and i wished i had made more. I added a little clam juice and left out the salt, but it would have been just as excellent without that.

Awesome! Took about 3 hours but worth it. I did not have crabmeat, okra, can of tom. or tom. juice. Substituted ketchup and did not add sugar. 2 roma tomatoes. Used half the hot sauce. Put in catfish in place of crabmeat. Yum!

The is the absoluely best Gumbo I've ever had! I love Gumbo and order it in restaurants quite frequently. This recipe definitely tops any restaurant Gumbo I've ordered. There's plenty of meat and a rich, delicious flavor. I substituted the crab with chicken because a local restauranteur serves it with chicken instead of crab and it's quite good. It turned out superb with the chicken! I grilled three chicken breasts, chopped them up and threw them into the roux with the sausage to soak up the flavor...besides that, I refuse to cook with immitation crab and let's face it...crab's not getting any cheaper these days. An amazing recipe well worth the effort!

This gumbo is fantastic!!! I made a few mods: replaced beef broth with homemade shrimp stock and left out the crab. The spice level was perfect to a bit spicy for my taste buds. I will definitely make this again.

Oh man soooo good! My 1st time making gumbo took awhile but was well worth it! I used butter instead of the bacon drippings I also added shredded chicken and some corn.
