Really liked this recipe; reminded me on home when I was little and my grandma made this with fresh out-of-the-garden applesauce. I served it with pear sauce from Trader Joes and it was really good. Too bad there is not a healthier way of frying the 'Puffer' as I really wanted a Schnaps afterwards to give my stomach a fat-break. Will make this again from time to time.

I grew up in a German household and these were a regular. We have always used unpeeled potatoes (more vitamins) and a blender (no shreeding necessary), just cube the potatoes. My husband still requests them after 45 years. Always use raw potatoes, spread thin and fry till crisp.

I have tried several recipes for potato pancakes over the years and have always been disappointed - until now! These were great. I boiled the potatoes until tender before shredding. I thought they needed a little more salt, so I added extra salt in the form of garlic salt and also added some onion powder (because onion powder makes most everything better!). I cooked them in my iron skillet, which browned them nicely.

To the reviewer "Amanda" (posted Nov. 26, 2007)...Amanda - mashed potatoes? These are NOT to be made with mashed potatoes. You made a completely different pancake using them. This is an old German recipe and you NEED to use GRATED, RAW potatoes. I have been making these for years and got the recipe from my German Grandmother. Please, try them with the grated raw spuds and you will not believe the difference.

I had never attempted potato pancakes before because I was afraid they'd taste like hash browns, but these have turned my opinion completely around! REALLY great, really easy (if you use a processor for shredding). I just spooned them into hot oil, flattened a bit with a spatula.. cook, flip, cook, done! Served with fresh grilled brats, wilted cabbage slaw (from this site), beer, pickled eggs... oh, and we sprinkled them with a tiny bit of granulated sugar, topped with applesauce and sour cream. WONDERFUL. Raves from everyone!!!

This was great! I sprinkled "Splenda" on top and had homemade Apple Butter on the side. "Wonderful". I cut this recipe to 3 servings and the two of us had some left over after breakfast. It required some preparation ahead of time, but it was worth the extra effort. The evening before,I boiled some potatos with the skin on for a few minutes. The next morning they peeled and grated easily.

This recipe reminds me of the potato pancakes that my dad used to make. I served mine with sour cream and they were perfect with the German Red Cabbage recipe and Bierrocks I. Oh my goodness, use this recipe! The potato fries up nicely and the onion adds a wonderful sweetness to the mixture. Yummy!

excellent consistency and taste. Try a dash of allspice in it - that's the way a German girlfriend made it for me ; allspice makes this recipe fabulous.

I hate to sound like a broken record, but these are truly the best potato pancakes I have ever had. I made them from leftover mashed potatoes, just about six cups to 1.5 times the recipe. I didn't have any trouble with moisture. I do recommend a skillet, to keep up with demand! They go quick!!!

Fantastic. First time for me and it was a breeze. Next time I will make them thinner so they crisp up more and faster than they did. I made them for breakfast with poached eggs and hollandaise. This is a keeper for me.
