Cookie had good texture, but lacked flavor. Won't make these again.

Texture wise, it's a great cookie. I think it needed more chocolate either in the batter (doubled) or with the addition of chocolate chips. All butter works great too (I only keep shortening in the house during holidays.)

Crispy, chewy, chocolatey, buttery, and just plain delicious! I cut the recipe in half and used butter flavored shortening, 1 c. white sugar and 1/2 c. of brown sugar. I didn't have german chocolate, so I used Heshey's dark (4 oz. melted) and added 1 c. of chips. I also used 2 tsp. of vanilla and omitted the water. Instead of walnuts, I thought almonds worked better here. The toffee chips were a wonderful addition and I upped that to a full cup. I rolled these into balls and gently pressed them down onto the cookie sheet. They baked up nicely in 15 minutes.

Great recipe. Might be better to add a little more chocolate. Recipe makes a lot of cookies.

I was a little leary about trying this recipe since it called for so much flour. I have a 5 qt. mixer, and just barely enough room in the bowl to slowly add the flour. Instead of making a whole bunch of tiny cookies, I rolled the dough into big balls, like the size of a large plum, and cooked them for 18 minutes. They turned out wonderful, and everyone liked them. Maybe they would be even better with mini chocolate chips added. They were soft, rather than crisp, and I liked that. I just thought maybe they could use a little bit more chocolate flavor. They looked picture perfect coming out of the oven, but it would also be fun to dip the tops in raw sugar before baking for added texture.
