This is my first time attempting to bake ANYTHING!! The cake was delicious and a hit with everyone who tasted it. I enjoyed myself in the kitchen as I am not one who cooks much either but with my first coming out as it has I am inspired to try other recips on this website. Thanks for a great recipe!

This was a wonderful cake, there are a lot of steps involved but it is worth it. Like others I doubled the frosting to frost the sides. This cake looks beautiful when finish and taste great, and I am not even a big fan of German Chocolate Cake

This cake turned out beautifully! I followed the recipe exactly, and though there were a lot of steps involved, the end result was worth it. Since there are three layers I found that there was plenty of topping for each serving and didn't need to make extra for the sides. The cake is wonderfully light, so extreme care was taken when removing it from the pan.

This recipe was great, but I suggest making double the filling. I did not have enough for the sides once I had frosted between the layers and the top of the cake. I went and bought a german frosting from the store for the sides so it was semi-homemade! :) I also added grated chocolate to the sides and garnished the cake with pecans. It was great!!

I made this cake for my brother's birthday and it turned out "OK" considering how much time went into it. The filling would get 5+ stars form me and the cake would get between a 2-3. I did make a few changes after reading the reviews here. For starters I made the filling first so it had lots of time to cool. I used 7oz of chocolate in the cake. For the filling I did 1 1/2 times the recipe. And I used 1/2 condensed milk and 1/2 evaporated milk. I used unsweetened coconut, both small pieces and large ribbons, 1/2 cup extra of it, and toasted both the coconut and chopped pecans. The filling was OUT of this world. So fantastic! The cake was a little dry and blah I thought.

Thought this cake was pretty and tasted good. I also doubled the chocolate for top of cake. I only gave it 4 stars because I didnt think it was "excellent." My company liked it and I sent it home with them. Probably would not make again due to how much time it took to make and fat/calories.

Cake texture was really light and fluffy. Made this for my husband's Birthday and he loved it! I will say it took me about an hour to put it all together but it was well worth it. I did add the additional German chocolate as suggested.

Germann Chocolate cake is my husband's favorite and I make one for his bday every year. I haven't found one that doesn't fall apart, including this one. I increased the chocolate to 6 oz per other reviews. The cake was delicious - he loved it. The only problem was that the layers cracked as soon as I assembled them, even though I let them cool for several hours first. The filling/topping was a little thin, but I was able to keep plenty of it on the top, even though a good amount slid down the sides and pooled at the bottom. Again, the cake tasted great - I just wish I could find a Germann Choc cake recipe that didn't fall apart. I don't have this problem with any other cake - including a 3 layer Italian Cream cake I make that also has egg whites in it...??

Ok, so I had SOOO much trouble with this recipe. For starters you cannot bake this as one cake. I have a huge springform pan which I thought might save me time and make icing it easier. Not so much, the cake never did really cook all he way in the middle, the edges were starting to burn so I had no choice but to take it out. Also the icing never thickened, I cooked and cooked and cooked and it WOULD NOT get any thicker. My cake looked awful because the nuts and coconut stuck to it, but the icing just pooled on the plate. I made this for my father-in-laws birthday, everyone ate it, but no one was too impressed. I might try again if I have time to spare and extra money to spend on ingredients.

My husband is a fan of German Chocolate cake so I made this for his birthday instead of the usual box variety. Without a doubt this recipe is the reason made from scratch cakes taste so much better!! I will tell you though that this recipe is time consuming! And maybe even more so if you are like me with little ones running around--but it will be worth it. I did not have cake flour so I went to "Martha's" website and found this conversion--For 1 cup of cake flour, you can substitute with 1 cup minus two tablespoons of all-purpose flour, which you should sift 3 or 4 times--And it worked out just fine. I also added more coconut, and pecans to the topping, and melted another ounce of chocolate to drizzle. MMMMMMMMMMM.....THE BEST!

After careful review of all the recipes for German Chocolate Cake, I chose this one due to all of the reviews. It was at the request of my boss, for her birthday. The cake is delicious, but it was too moist and after assembling all the layers, it fell completely apart into one big mess. I quickly got out my trifle bowl and made a layer of cake, a layer of cool whip, then another layer of cake, and topped if off with cool whip. This turned out really nice for such a big mess! Not sure why it fell to pieces but I did double the frosting recipe, like suggested by so many others. Taste wise, I give it a thumbs up!

One of the moistest german chocolate cakes I have ever had! I used Saco powdered buttermilk blend...I sifted the Saco w/ the flour & then used a cup of water when the buttermilk was called for. (Perfect for those of us who only rarely use buttermilk. You can find it w/ the powdered milk.) I added a bit more pecans to the frosting at my husband's request. Wonderful cake... hubby said it was better than Grandma's.

I wish you had more than 5 stars because this recipe was off the charts! Made this cake for a co-workers birthday and it was a HIT!! Everyone said it's the moistest cake they'd ever eaten. It disappeared. Followed the recipe as written with no problems. It was worth the extra work!! Thank you!!!
