This cake/frosting is WONDERFUL! Tip for the frosting: don't get discouraged if your frosting doesn't thicken right away. BE PATIENT! I doubled the frosting recipe and it took 20-25 minutes for it to thicken. I also toasted the pecans and coconut-- it came out perfect!

This was amazingly good. I couldn't find any German Chocolate anywhere, so I used Ghiradelli instead. I think I would use a little more next time, but it was still super great. Make at least 1 1/2 times as much frosting as it says, if not twice as much, if you want to frost the sides, too. Definitely toast the coconut and pecans. It might not seem like it will make much of a difference, but it really will.

This was the best German chocolate cake I've ever had, and people are begging me for the recipe. It's important to remember that this does NOT make enough frosting. Use the frosting on the Baker's German Chocolate recipe card. The cake part is very similar, but a little different. The frosting is exactly the same, except the one on the card makes more, which is necessary for this cake. Also, if you like the semisweet chocolate, melt double the amount to drizzle on the top. This cake is worth all the trouble!

I made this for a friend's birthday. It was a huge hit. The cake is moist, but not too sweet. I'm not a fan of coconut, but I have to say I enjoyed the cake. I will be making this again.

I personally don't like German chocolate cake (icky coconut) but my husband loves it and requested it as his birthday cake this year. I made two layers instead of three and I didn't put the chocolate glaze on at the end. I don't think it was needed and I was to tired by the time I was done making the cake and frosting it. It still turned out great. All my guests including my husband said it was the BEST German choc. cake they had ever tasted. It is labor intensive but I guess worth it because everyone loved it!!

This cake was amazing! Like many others have said, make about double the icing recipe. I did as the directions said and didn't spread the icing along the sides of the cake. Next time I will cover the entire cake though as the icing is SO good. Drizzling (sp?) the melted chocolate over the cake with a small spoon was a great aesthetic touch.

Wow. I've never made German chocolate cake before, and while this recipe does take a little more time, it is TOTALLY worth it. I used bakers grease dusted with flour and had no problem removing the cakes each of the 3 or 4 times I've made this. I used the German Chocolate Cake Icing II instead of this one, and made sure to toast the coconut and pecans before I put them in. I doubled the chocolate on top (it gives such a nice extra something that more was definitely in order) and made a little more icing. People who've had German chocolate cakes for years said this gave them a run for their money. Awesome.

My husband requested that I make a German Chocolate cake for his birthday, because his mother would always make it for him during his youth. I had a birthday BBQ in honor of him, and it was a hit!! His mother and father told me that it was the best they had ever had, and she was retiring from making hers!! I am now the official German Chocolate Cake maker in the family! Thanks for sharing your fabulous recipe! I followed the recipe just as it was written. I did however follow the suggestion of not "over mixing" - mine did not "fall apart."

My grandkids and I made this for my birthday this weekend and it was absolutely fantastic! We followed the recipe exactly as written and it turned out great. The cake was moist and the coconut topping was excellent, we had a can of chocolate frosting and put that on the sides, it was as beautiful as any cake purchased at a bakery. Thank you for the recipe.

This was a crumbly mass of deliciousness. I am an experienced baker, followed the instructions exactly and it fell apart upon cutting. It is very moist so that isn't the problem. Maybe it is the separating of the eggs. I made 1 1/2 times the frosting, which is to die for! I might try this again, but without separating the eggs.

i followed this recipe exactly as it reads, and it was absolutely fabulous. everything turned out great, and my coworkers raved about it! two things:the cakes are difficult to get out of the pan, and I will double to frosting next time as I did not have enough to cover the sides of the cake. other than that, perfect!
