DIRECTIONS
In large bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups flour, sugar, undissolved yeast, salt, and herbs.
Heat milk, water, and 1/4 cup butter until very warm (120-130 degrees F); stir into dry ingredients. Stir in egg and enough remaining flour to make soft dough.
Knead on lightly floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 4-6 minutes. Cover; let rest on floured surface 10 minutes.
Divide dough into 3 equal pieces. Roll each piece to 30 inch rope. Braid ropes; pinch ends to seal. Tie knot in center of braid; wrap ends around knot, in opposite directions, and tuck under to make round loaf. Place on greased baking sheet. Cover; let rise in warm, draft-free place until doubles in size, about 20 to 40 minutes.
Bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for about 30 to 35 minutes or until done, covering with foil during last 10 minutes of baking to prevent excess browning. Melt remaining butter; brush over loaf. Sprinkle with additional herbs, if desired. Remove from sheet; let cool on wire rack.

I've made this recipe many times and it's delicious. My family always request that I make this bread for every Thanksgiving dinner because it goes so well with it, or any dinner for that matter. Smother the bread with butter when freshly out of the oven and it's marvelous!

Fabulous recipe. The second time I used fresh herbs (rosemary, basil, and oregano) and sprinkled the top with a bit of chopped rosemary near the end. Disappeared in a flash.

This was yummy! I made one loaf, and forgot to cover it with aluminum foil. Since I was making it for a bridal tea, and it was a little too brown, my husband and I ate it...all of it. So good. The second one was even better. Everyone loved it.

I have tried to make home made bread in the past and every time it came out terrible. This is a very easy recipe and the bread came out perfect! I listened to other reviewers and increased the amount of spices and I added parsley and onion powder; it tastes great.

rather tasty, and quite simple. i would add 1/8-1/4 teaspoon of additional spices to the melted butter and brush over the cooked bread, well, maybe some finely grated parmesean also.
