Very good soup. The cloves add a different but nice flavor. I made 4 batches and canned it. I followed all the ingredients exactly. I have a food mill, but didn't want to mess with it, so I put it in the blender and through the strainer. Turned out great!

Just got done with dinner, and this soup was great.. I was never tomato soup (can) person, and never really had it homemade. Love it.. I did take a reviewers advise and added saute'd garlic and onion. In the end it did seem a little light on flavor so I added some balsamic vinegar and a touch of cayenne pepper, made it just pop in flavor. Thinking Ill take the leftovers and add some veggies and maybe some tiny pasta for a bit of variety. I also did double the recipe. Great use of fresh tomatoes. will certainly keep this recipe around!!!! thanks

Yum! A great, easy way to use up excess tomatoes. I unfortunately don't have a food mill, so I peeled and seeded them first, then ran the soup through the blender prior to thickening. Used an extra 1/4 tsp of salt due to sodium free chicken broth and added one tbsp. of tomato paste for some extra oomph. This is good, inexpensive, and good for you. The only negative is that it spoils you for the canned kind!

I think this is a good base to start a soup...but it seems pretty much everyone has added/removed stuff to make it better which is why I'm only giving 3 stars as is. Next time I will omit the cloves or maybe only add 1, the flavor of them is WAY too overwhelming! I wish I would have read the reviews to find that a lot of people didn't add them or only put in 1. Unless you LOVE the flavor of cloves, I would add sparingly. I added 2 garlic cloves and will add more next time. I also added half and half to make it a creamier soup. I added a little bit of basil too because I was trying to get rid of the clove flavor. After the first step, I put it in the food processor and then strained it through a strainer. Put the stuff in the strainer back through the food processor again and then strained that which left a nice smooth soup, no lumps, chunks, seeds or anything like that. I will definitely try this again with more left over summer tomatoes and some adjustments! :) Back to change my rating to a 2...the more I thought about it, the cloves just ruined this soup. I made the tomato basil soup recipe from this site and that's a winner.

goodbye canned tomato soups, (not being a fan of them anyway) this soup was so easy, and it tasted liked I had slaved for hours, as I always have an over abundance of tomato in my garden, I picked away, also picking some salsa peppers and bell peppers to experiment with the recipe, just to add a kick. It's a hit! My wife will be pleased!

This is spectacular! I also didn't have cloves on hand so I added in a few sprinkles of ground clove and used 4 cloves slit in half. I can't believe the flavor! It is September and homemade soup will now be a staple! No more store bought soup for us! YUMMMM

I just finished making this and it is so good. I will make it again when I have an abundance of fresh tomatoes. Thanks for sharing. I didn't have any cloves so I used a pinch of All Spice, and a pinch of dried chili flakes. I like a little heat. Very good!

With fresh garden tomatoes this is very affordable and delicious recipe. Those who live on a budget it is kind to the wallet and even kinder to the taste buds. Looking forward to sharing this recipe with friends.

The taste was absolutely wonderful- but the leaving the seeds and skin in made for some pretty gross crunchy texture. If I would have seeded and skinned the tomatoes, it would have been wonderful. I added leftover rice from Chinese food and it was perfect!

This soup is very tasty. I had enough fresh tomatoes that I tripled the recipe so that I could can some. I also added the garlic cloves (per other reviews) and blended the ingredients in a blender to make it creamier.

This was good. I like that it has a very fresh taste to it, but I don't think it's worth making again. HOWEVER, I must admit that I followed other reviewers advice and added italian spices to it. That made it taste like a runny spaghetti sauce instead of tomatoe soup.

This was so good and so simple. I did however only put 1/2 onion since they were strong onions and I used chicken broth w/vegs.& herbs instead of the plain chicken broth. But this was fantastic and was a great way to use up some tomato before they go bad.

I finally got around to making this soup. Unfortunatly I didn't plant tomatoes this year and (as I knew I would) am now kicking myself. I picked up some really ripe tomatoes from the grocery store quick sale shelf for $1.49. I had enough tomatoes to increase the recipe to 9 servings. Well the soup was eaten for dinner and what was left was polished off as a before bed snack. My 13 yr. old son was the culprit. I am so happy when he can dig into something healthy. This soup tasted like Campbells Tomato Soup, only better because it was fresher and cleaner tasting. I think the cloves are very important in this recipe. If I hadn't known about them I don't think I would have guessed. But they are an important flavour element. I recommend including them. For a simple, no fuss meal I served this soup with a mixture of grilled cheese sandwiches and hot dogs. For sure I will be on the lookout for some more lovely tomatoes, on sale or not. Thanks so much for sharing.

First time making homemade tomato soup. WOW! It was so easy, and delicious. I did not have the onion, fresh cloves, but I did have two large ripe tomatoes that made the four cups that it called for, and the other basic ingredients. I did add to my serving 1 tsp of Pico Pica hot sauce. I will of course try it again with the cloves and onion. I do not have a mill so in the blender it went and through a strainer. Goodbye Campbell's.

This soup was wonderful! What a great way to use all of these tomatoes from my garden. I added some fresh basil and oregano from the garden as well. Topped with cheddar cheese, this soup was so good I had to go back for seconds. I read the recipe wrong and put in 4 cloves of garlic instead of just cloves. It was awesome that way. I agree that it doesn't make much soup and you should double the recipe. The second time I made this I added a touch of cream and it made it even better!

This soup was really good. It was my first time making tomato soup with tomatoes from my garden. I didn't have cloves so I left that out. I also didn't have a food mill, so after the boiling I put it through a blender and then strained it, discarded the seeds etc. and continued with the rest of the recipe. It turned out great.
