Normally I don't follow recipes closely but I actually followed the recipe as is and my family enjoyed it. I think next time I would skin the tomatoes, use a little ground clove instead of whole and use a blender instead of a foodmill. There were a few too many seeds in my soup. Another option would be to use less seedy Romas but I used what came from my garden. I made a double recipe and for 3 of us there was little left.

I don't have a food mill so I just put everything in a blender after cooking and added some fresh diced tomatoes to make it chunkier and some fresh basil a few min. before it was done. Also I omitted the cloves because I just don't like them. Everyone LOVED it! Great way to use up fresh tomatoes from the garden!

This is so good, very yummy for a cool fall day! Now I would have given it 5 stars but I did do a bit of the tweeking that was given in one of the reviews. Thanks UJOHNC00! Your advice was great without being way too complicated and time consuming, just the way I like it!

I've made this recipe so many times now that I could probably make it form memory. Two things, I don't like cloves, so I always substitute rosemary. One review said to be stingy with the salt, and I agree. I also don't use a foodmill, since I had never even heard of one before this recipe. My father-in-law grew a lot of tomatoes this year, so when I can a bunch of this soup, I'll be sure to come back and review how successful that was.

Very good, I didn't bother with a foodmill, I just put it all in the blender. Also added carrot instead of the sugar, and one potato to thicken so I could skip the ruox step. (I'm very lazy).

very good! I didn't have an onion, so I used onion powder. I also added fresh basil. I blanched, peeled, and seeded the tomatoes before cooking, then put it all through the blender at the end because I didn't have a food mill. A bit labor intensive, but worth it!

I just finish eating a great big bowl of this and just LOVED it. I miss read the ingredient and used garlic cloves instead of whole gloves but this was not a bad thing. I started with boiling the tomatoes a few seconds to remove the skin which helped eliminate straining at the end. When the soup was ready I added rice and milk to it to make it more filling and it was just so wonderful. I will be making this again and again. I will also be using this tomato soup recipe when I make my chili which usually calls for 2-3 cans tomato soup. Mmmmm yummy!!!!

What a great way to use the many, many fresh tomatoes that I have in fall! I did make some changes: I used whatever spices I grabbed from the garden, and half the salt. I didn't feel like washing appliances, so I just put it through a sieve (as a last step too, so I didn't worry about lumps). I also used it as a base for a minestrone soup. Excellent!!

This is a very good tomato soup. I am used to milk in my tomato soup, so next time I will add some milk or cream to take the bite out of it. It was still very tasty- but it is a very strong tomato flavor. The cloves are subtle yet really add some nice depth of flavors to it, but I might try adding some garlic or italian seasoning next time as well. This is a great basic soup to start out with, and alter to your personal taste as you go.

I made 4 double batches already this summer with my bounty of garden fresh tomatoes. Cored tomatoes and stuck everything in the vita mix. Froze most so I can enjoy this in the Fall and Winter. I substituted vegetarian bouillion. I used garlic cloves instead of actual cloves. (I smelled the cloves in the store and I didn't like them.) I learned after my first batch to not to double the salt, keep it at 1 tsp when doubling. I also wisk some sour cream in before eating for added creaminess and fat which make it taste really good.

I'm really sorry but I didn't like this at all, I don't know if it was something that I did or didn't do but it didn't taste good at all, or at least not what I expected. I will use this to make goolish or something but not to just eat as soup. I was very disappointed.

This soup is awesome! My entire family loved it! I only did a couple of things different. I added 3 cloves of fresh minced garlic, some italian seasoning, and 1 cup of milk after mixing it with the roux. I prefer cream of tomato soup. This is why I added milk. It was delicious! Also, I doubled the recipe for my family of 5 and it was perfect. There wouldn't have been enough if I hadn't. I do not have a food mill so I just poured it into my blender and mixed it that way. I left peel, seeds, and all in it, and it was great! Definitely a must try recipe!

This was okay, but I was disappointed. Especially after doubling the recipe and using all of the tomatoes I had left from our garden. I've always been a huge fan of the tomato soup from La Madeleine and was probably looking for something more like that. I did add cream to each serving after tasting the initial product and that helped, but it still didn't give me the amazing soup I was hoping for.

This is a family favorite but I keep on forgetting to rate it. I've made this countless times. The recipe is perfect as is, especially when we get fresh tomatoes from our garden. I've recently started adding things to it by adding a handful of tiny pasta shells/bows and/or veggies like corn, green beans chopped, etc. So good!! Thank you so much for this recipe Charlotte.

I always get a kick out of the reviews that change a recipe so much that it is no longer anything near the original! Look, the whole point of this recipe is that it is uncomplicated. There are plenty of really good fancy-sassy tomato soup recipes to try, if that's what you want. But this soup sticks to a great principle: simple recipes are often the best. And the result is what tomato soup should taste like. Few additives and fresh, ripe tomatoes. Real tomato flavor. Don't change a thing and you will be rewarded.

I doubled the recipe and I tried the soup as the recipe stated up until the thickening process. It tasted good enough but I decided to add some other ingredients. I found I wanted a more tomato punch so I added 2 tbsp of tomato paste. I also added some fresh basil at the end of the cooking time and a clove of garlic to the onion/tomato/broth mixture. I didn't thicken the soup I left it as it was and it was a very nice fresh soup. I gave it 4 stars only because I added other things but the soup as written is very good as well.

This soup was delicious! I did follow a user's review and did the following: I doubled the recipe otherwise it makes very little and I like leftovers! Sauteed 4 garlic cloves in olive oil, added a large chopped onion, then added 6 cups of garden fresh tomatoes, must be sweet and ripe, I think I will add some fresh chopped basil next time, when it finished cooking I added 1 cup of cream and heated it through the soup, I didn't use a food mil to puree it, instead I used and immersion blender. It was great!
