Tastes just like you'd get in a restaurant.

This was excellent! My husband buys french onion soup at every restaurant and said this was better than a lot of them, we both really enjoyed it. I omitted the wine, and scaled it for 2 people. I also put less onion than called for. Thanks for a great recipe, I will definatly be making it again!

This was my first time making a french onion soup. My husband liked a local restaurant's version, so I thought why not?. We were both happy with the results of this soup. The only change I made was to serve the bread separate...build your own style. I don't like soggy bread. I will definately be making this again! Thanks.

This recipe is horrible. The techniques are backward and the end result was less than spectacular.

This soup turned out so delicious, my husband made the most satisfied sounds as he ate it! I made it for 4 servings and it was enough for 2 large crocks and one leftover for another time. Used mozzarella instead and added the wine as I sauted the onions so it cooked with all the other flavors. It was better than any restaurant.

I used consomme instead of beef broth and the flavor was very strong. I added more water, about 1 1/4 cup more and it tasted great.

This soup was great! I do want to point out the obvious though - if you use red wine, you will have a burgundy-colored soup. I didn't have any white wine at the time, and I wasn't having company over or anything, so I used red wine. Still tasted great though. Thanks for the recipe!

Great French Onion Soup recipe. I only used 3 large onions instead of 4. Also, I didn't use any wine (didn't have any) put 2 tbsp. of Worchestire instead. Turned out wonderful. I will be making this again. Thanks!

Excellent. I cubed the slice of bread on top to make it easier to eat and I used shredded Monterey Jack cheese. Careful with the thyme, it can be overpowering. Will definitely make again.

I made this recipe with only 2 changes. I added a slice of swiss cheese to be melted on top of the bowl and I used slightly less wine than was called for (3/4 cup). My husband and I loved it. Very tasty and the wine seemed to give the soup a very interesting depth of flavours. Very nice and will definitely make again!!

I really liked the idea of adding flour to make it thicker. Here are the changes I made to it: I slow cooked it for a few hours to make the onions soft (if you do this add more beef broth or water, depending on how salty you want it). I used provolone cheese instead of mozzarella. I also broiled the bread by itself with the cheese on it, then placed it into the bowl and broiled it again with more cheese on top. It came out really good!

My husband and kids loved this soup, but I found it rather sweet and lacking that rich, dark broth of by favorite restaurant french onion soups. It wasn't bad, mind you, just not my favorite.

Very yummy soup. Made some small changes: used only two onions instead of four and sauteed them until they were limp and browning (about 20 minutes). Added a boullion cube with the water. Substituted dried oregano and garlic powder for the parsley (not a parsley fan). And finally used Havarti instead of mozzarella. Will definately make again.

My husband and I went out to dinner with our girls a week or so ago. We had onion soup and I then found out my girls liked it. So I came here looking for a recipe for the soup. I tried this one and it was even better than the one at the restaurant. We will be making this again and again.... Well it's about a year since I wrote the above and we still enjoy this recipe at least once a week. My girls don't even like the restarunt onion soup anymore

Excellent. I have been searching for the perfect French Onion Soup recipe and have finally found it. My husband thinks it is as good as Le Papillion Restaurant's (Toronto, Ontario)French Onion Soup. A definite keeper!!!
