This is an excellent recipe. Only changes were I didn't add any water. Added a bit of bouillion for more beef flavor.(Could add real beef broth if recently made roast beef.)Used less wine. Also used Provolone cheese. Yummy!

My mother always made the best french onion soup. When I went off to college I wanted to make some for Valentines Day and couldn't get ahold of her. I found this recipe, and it's the same thing! I think this is the most delicious French Onion Soup I've ever tasted, and I've tried quite a few varieties. Unfortunately, I couldn't get any red wine, so I just used more broth and no water... it was still delicious. Though I'd recommend using the wine if you've got it. Also, I like lots of bread and cheese, so I put two slices of bread. :)

I'm not much of a soup fan. This is the only one I really like and this recipe was great! Since I'm new to cooking I didn't know that leaving the butter and sugar a little while before adding the onions would make them darker brown. I'll try that next next time.

I'm sorry to rate this so poorly but I thought it was terrible. I make French Onion soup often, eat it when I go out, and have had it in France, and this is some of the worst I have ever had. It was so bland, I couldn't taste anything but a touch of wine. I added some thyme, fresh parsley, worcestershire sauce to perk it up some, and it still did not help. Finally, I salted what was left and that gave it some taste. I feel like I just wasted these ingredients. Sorry, Alison, but I will not make this again.

I think this soup was absolutely great... but, it was verrry bland and had to make modifications based off other users' comments. I used one less onion for more broth, added 4 big shakes of worscht-sauce, 1tbsp. sherry and 1tbsp. lemon juice. I used Jarlesburg cheese and that gave it a slightly sweet flavor. Let me tell you, I was sceptical at first so I tasted the soup as I added - It was sooo much better but, this recipe deserves 3*'s for the effort and a good base!

Oh my goodness! I am a newlywed and just learning how to cook via allrecipes.com. This soup was so easy, yet it tasted like I was in a restaurant! I can't believe how delicious this came out. Made it for my husband's birthday, he was much impressed! Absolutely delicious recipe!

I used butter and a little olive oil instead of margerine and I used 1 red onion. I added 1 clove of minced garlic and 1 small shallot when the onions were just about done and added some worcestershire sauce, white wine(didn't have red), sherry, pepper and lemon juice to that and reduced it then added the flour and cooked it and added 2 cans of beef broth. After it came to a boil to thicken, I reduced the heat and corrected the seasonings w/ more sherry, worcestershire sauce and pepper and simmered it longer. Delicious!!!

Almost excellent, but the beef broth gave it too heavy a flavor. A vegetable broth probably would have been better.

Normally I love french onion soup, without the onions. (it's a quirk of mine). So I only cup up one onion to put in this. Boy was I sorry, the taste is delicious. I did improvise like past reviewers by adding some worcheshire sauce and some salt and pepper. Of course I had to do it ghetto style by using regular sliced bread croutons and using provolone cheese leftover from some French Dip sandwiches the week before but all in all 5 stars, considering I would rename my improvisations to Ghetto French Onion soup. ;-)

I'm not sure why others think this soup is bland. It's delicious! Tastes just like the soup my mother makes. I did do a couple of things differently: I used a little less sugar, I let it simmer for about 35 minutes and when it came to adding the flour, I combined a tbsp of flour with some water in a small container and then slowly added it to the onions so there weren't any lumps. Do add some salt and pepper. I'll make this again! Thanks!

This was my first time making French onion soup...I was really surprised how easy it was. I used day-old French bread instead of baquette and it tasted fantastic...bread gets soggy in the soup anyway so you can't tell the difference!!

It was a good base recipe, but very bland. I added salt and pepper, worchestershire and a touch of soy and it livened right up. Also, shreaded swiss (rather than sliced) is the way to go for a gooey cheesey topping.

I just LOVE soup, and french onion is one of my favorites. This version was pretty good, not the best I've ever had, but good. I used port wine (it's all I had, without opening a new bottle, and well then I would have to drink it ;) (ha!) I think the port altered the flavor, as it was a bit sweet. Thanks Allison.

Yummy! Upon recommendation of some of the other reviews, I doubled the amount of butter, and added some Worchestire (sp?) sauce--about 1 1/2 tablespoon. Also, it took a lot longer than 10 minutes to cook down the onions, but it was well worth it!!! Also added some salt and ground pepper as well.

The first time I made this recipe I used cooking wine from the supermarket. It was good but the wine overpowered the rest of the ingredients. For the next time, I bought a bottle of Beaujolais and it came out PERFECT. Thank you Allison!
