Directions

  1. Heat oil in saucepot. Add onions. Cover and cook over low heat 15 minutes. Uncover.
  2. Add sugar and cook over medium heat 15 minutes or until onions are golden.
  3. Add flour and cook and stir 1 minute. Add broth and wine. Heat to a boil. Cook over low heat 10 minutes.
  4. Divide soup among 4 bowls. Top each with bread and cheese.

I give this recipe 5 stars because it is the best BASIC french onion soup recipe that I've found. I made several adjustments to make it healthier. I used 2 red, 2 white, and 2 yellow onions, whole wheat flour, low sodium chicken broth, and for the croutons I used whole wheat- all natural french bread with olive oil and swiss cheese then I broil in the oven.

I did not care for this.... should have called for a red wine

I fixed this and loved it. I left out the wine but followed the recipe with all the other ingredients. It was very, very easy to cook and oh so good. Thank you.

This was easy and flavorful. It makes a great starter for a fancy meal at home.

Excellent, used red wine instead turned out great. Also had no swiss so used mozzarella cheese. will make again for sure

I was craving French Onion soup (pregnant lol) This hit the spot and was very easy to make. Had to leave out the wine unfortunately though.
