This is delish! I was worried b/c I was out of bread flour so I used all purpose. Made this by hand (no bread machine). And used rapid-rise yeast, not bread machine type. Oh and I was out of eggs, so no golden brushed top. So uhm, yeah time to go shopping. But still turned out wonderful! Trying to hold back from eating it all up before dinner!

Excellent, my bread machine does the first rise on the dough cycle so I just took it out after the machine stopped kneading and put it into the greased bowl. I did roll out the dough and roll up but I cut it into 6 pieces to make very nice baguettes sized perfectly for sandwiches and just for smearing warm butter on. Thank you so much for this truly easy and delicious french bread.

These tasted great!! They were crunchy on the outside and light and chewy on the inside. I don't have a bread machine, so I made this by hand. I made 4 hoagie-sized baguettes and we ate them with the "Easy Slow Cooker French Dip" sandwich meat on this site. I need some practice shaping my baguettes, but that just gives me an excuse to use this recipe again!

This is a FANTASTIC recipe! I will definitely use again. Will take some practice to get the rolling down right, but the flavor is fantastic, and that smell as its baking is heaven!

After spending a few summers in France I have become a bread snob. That said, this is the BEST BREAD I have had round here! It comes so close to the real (French) thing! It's a great base, and easy to alter. Sometimes I like to rub olive oil on the bread for a completely different taste and texture, I get a lot of complements when I do that. I don't have a bread machine so I use my KitchenAid mixer. If you do it that way, first mix the yeast with the sugar and (warm) water. Then the flour, then salt. Since I have found this recipe I can't stop making it! I have even been offered money to make it for people because everybody just loves this bread.

Yum! This bread was fantastic and the wonderful smell of fresh bread baking in the oven made it hard to wait! I didn't feel like pulling out the bread machine, so mixed and kneaded by hand. Even my husband, who is not a big bread fan liked it! This is definitely a keeper.

Fantastic! Made in a bread machine with bread machine yeast. I cut into 4 pieces for 7 1/2 inch meatball subs. I baked on parchment paper. I didn't add the egg white or water. It came out crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. Perfect!!

I haven't ever made bread before making this recipe. It was so easy and came out amazing! My husband couldn't believe that I had made baguettes for our dinner. I wish I had known before now that homemade bread was so easy and delicious!

I have never baked french bread in my life before this and it was easy-peasy! I like a soft loaf so I followed another member's advice about beating a whole egg and brushing that on the loaves. These were fantastic and are gobbled up immediately whenever I make them!

This was THE BEST bread I have ever made, hands down. I don't have a bread maker to mix the dough, but that didn't matter. I followed all the directions precisely, except I kneaded the salt into the dough. My house smelled so wonderful as this was baking, and I've already made three loaves! (they didn't last!) My last batch, I baked in a bread pan to use for sandwiches, and when that loaf came to an end, I used the rest for French Toast, and it was the best I'd ever made! Thank you for sharing this bread, it is a winner in my house!

Oh my! I totally screwed up this recipe and it still came out great! I only had all purpose flour on hand so that's what I used. I don't have a bread machine so just threw everything into a bowl and then worked the dough with my hands. The only thing that I had no idea how to do was adding the yeast (whether I should let it proof first or not). I mixed one packet (8g) of active dry yeast with 1/4 cup warm water and 1 tsp sugar. After about 10 minutes it seemed to be frothy enough so I used about half of that for the recipe. For my first time making bread, I'd say it came out great! Other things I did: brushed a few times with plain water for a crunchy crust and baked on parchement paper.

I don't have a bread makers, so I made this by hand following the instructions other reviewers mentioned. The only thing is that the first time I made it, it was more dense than I expected. Then I read somewhere that when making it by hand rather than a bread machine you should add more yeast, so I used 2.5 tsp of yeast and it turned out really great. Also, because of reviewers saying the crust was too soft, I left out brushing it with egg white and water the first few times I made it, but then I just tried it with the egg white/water and it was so delicious. Not like the bread from the store's crust, but more like Subway's bread's crust. very soft and chewy and I liked it best that way
