Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup hazelnuts, ground
  • 1/8 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 6 tablespoons shortening
  • 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. Mix together the flour, hazelnuts, baking powder, spices and salt. In a large bowl, cream the shortening and powered sugar. Beat in the lemon zest. Gradually stir in the dry ingredients. Press the dough into an ungreased 9-inch square baking pan.
  3. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes, until the top is golden. Let cool in the pan or on a wire rack.
