"That is the best chocolate cake ever." At least that is what my husband (who is very picky) and his friends had to say about it. It came out very moist, and fudgey (he thought I had added pudding) . All time favorite chocolate and easy too. I used just a plain whipped buttercream frosting with chocolate shavings and chocolate covered strawberries. Absolutley to die for.

this recipe is excellent! I bake alot and this is the BEST chocolate cake recipe i have ever tried! Instead of butter icing, try a chocolate glaze over the cake just before its completely cool so the glaze soaks in YUM! Glaze: 1 cup sifted icing sugar 2 tablespoons cocoa 2 tablespoons milk ½ teaspoon vanilla

A really fabulous recipe. This cake is soo chocolatey! I had a slice 6 hours ago and still feel it's too soon for another piece! If you are cooking this in the UK, use Self Raising flour. I got confused and used Plain flour! It made the cake really moist and dense, but really rich. The Self Raising flour will had more height and lightness to the cake. Also, next time I will also only use 1/2 cup of cocoa powder in the cake and increase the flour, and only 1 cup in the icing (increase the sugar)

This Cake made up awsome!!! I made this with unbleached flour and had great sucess. I did however sub dark rum for the water. served with bar b que chicken and corn on the cobb and fresh salad. This and a dark roast coffee topped our night off great.

This is an excellent cake! Although I didn't make the chocolate frosting that was provided in the recipe, I thought that the cake turned out very well. It was moist and very chocolatey, to the satisfaction of all those who ate it. I would definitely make this cake again.

The cake is awesome, although I used cream cheese frosting instead of the obsenely chocolatey icing this comes with. (I have made the frosting too, hence how I know just how chocolatey it is!) The cake itself is already extreme chocolate, so I figured the cream cheese frosting went well, and a friend of mine who is an all out chocolate lover agreed. I would recommend using coconut oil instead of vegetable oil, as its the only oil recommended for cooking (hence bad press that says otherwise).

I've made this cake twice now and both times it has come out great. I have used 2 9" pans and not had a problem with run-over and they are average height pans. I have had the problem in the past with other recipes when I used a soft wheat flour such as White Lily. For this recipe I used Gold Medal and did not have a problem. I found the cake to be very moist but not heavy. It was sturdy enough to split the layers easily. The frosting make just the right amount for the four layers. It was very chocolately and not overpoweringly sweet. My family was very pleased that I made them this for Valentines Day. It's great with ice cream.

I only made the cake and not the icing, but it was very good - I will definitely make this again. I turned out very light and fluffy. I liked that I can make this recipe with readily available ingredients.

This cake is wonderful!! My husband (yes I said husband) made this cake for his mother's 76th birthday. It came out wonderful. The only change we made is we used cake flour. The cake was so light and moist!! I was so proud of him.

I had never made a cake from scratch and this cake turned out perfect. Rich, moist and delicious. The only variation I want to try next time is to reduce the amount of cocoa in the frosting. Great taste but could taste the powder slightly.

Serve with a gallon of milk! This cake was excellent. I made it for Christmas Dinner & it was a huge hit! Followed recipe exactly except that I used 3 cake pans instead of 2. No overflow & there was enough icing. I've found a winner!

Wow! The is the best from scratch chocolate cake I've made. I choose it because I had everything in my pantry - no special trips to the store. It was easy peasy and turned out fabulous. I used a different chocolate cream cheese frosting and split each layer to make it a four layer cake. It was the perfect birthday cake!

I was a bit skeptical about boiling water in a cake recipe, but it was great. I only had 6 inch pans so had enough left over for near a dozen cupcakes as well. the icing is as perfect as you can get, but I will cut it in half next time as had way toooo much left over, and I like it thick. It does have a very extremely watery consistancy but it bakes perfect. Thumbs up on this one.

The frosting-to-cake ratio on this cake is perfect. Yes, the flavor is extreme, but you need that sometimes! :) I took this cake to a party and got lots of compliments on it. I'll definitely make it again.

WOW!!! Follow the instruction and hand-stir the boiling water VERY thoroughly. You will end up with a somewhat soupy, but uniform, batter. I had no problem, as some did. I used two 9" pans, but only filled them 2/3 of the way and had some batter left, which I tossed out. (I was afraid of overflowing the pans.) This batter cooked up high and perfect! To avoid problems de-panning it: make sure you use the toothpick test and also touch the top to make sure it springs back. If you take it out too soon, you'll have a wet mess. And follow the instructions and let it sit AT LEAST 10 minutes before de-panning it. The frosting was an amazing consistency! Creamy and easy to work with. Add a little extra milk if it is not creamy enough and alternate the milk/cocoa/sugar as recommended. I measured the 10X sugar per the recipe, but then added it a little at a time "to taste." I ended up with about a half cup of 10X left. If you split the layers, you will have sufficient frosting. I did not split the layers and had a ton leftover. This cake was UNBELIEVABLE. Moist, dense cake - not too sweet - and creamy delicious frosting. I made it the day before a party and covered it tightly and it was perfect the next day. Better than bakery cake. Better than any chocolate cake I have ever had!!! My guests' eyes were rolling back into their heads, this cake was THAT good. This doesn't get 5 stars, it gets 10!!

Although I have been cooking for a long time, this was my first try at making a cake from scratch and I'm glad I picked this recipe first, or I would have been discouraged. It is fabulous! I will be baking this quite often, as my teen-aged kids and husband loved it! And I agree, there is more than enough icing, so put plenty between the layers, you won't run out and it's really good!

Great recipe- was incredibly moist (so moist that I would recommend using parchment paper under the cake so it doesnt stick at all to the pan). It really is one of those cakes that look and taste fantastic. It is not a fancy cake or one for those with refined tastes but is all around great and I would highly recommend it. I up the amount of cocoa and made it a little darker and less sweet and it was fantastic
