This cake is awesome! Very moist and chocolatey. I was kind of scared to bake it when I saw how thin the batter was after adding the boiling water, but it came out just fine. I used a different icing, but will be trying the one mentioned in this recipe next time.

Ok, so like everything...i completely alter the recipe. I made my own icing. I subbed some wheat flour and whey protein for the regular flour and some Xylitol for sugar. All of these subs and still a rockin' chocolate cake....yummy!

i made these into cupcakes and mini-cupcakes. instant hit! i only wished i tried the frosting in the recipe (my friend insisted on his) absolutely delicious chocolatey flavor, moist in the middle with a little slight crunch in the tops. i baked the mini cupcakes for only 15 min. only problem i had was getting most of them out, even though i greased the pans like a mad woman. next time, i will buy paper cups. i will not need to buy cake mix again!

I followed this recipe exactly and thought this was very bland. Not very chocolately at all and very dry. My mother and sister actually went out of their way to tell me how much they disliked the cake! I was very disappointed with the way it turned out..I was afraid to try the frosting. I

this recipe is the best chocolete cake recipe I have ever used! I put a little bit more milk in the frosting to make it more spreadable. Really Yummy!

Very good, moist choc cake. batter will be thin...hand stir the water in at first and then use the blender. Use strong coffee istead of plain water! Frosting is alright...too thin with that much milk though- use less. I prefer a mocha frosting made with Kahlua and coffee! Yummy!

I only used about 1/4 cup of boiling water and I think the cake came out just fine. Maybe it could use another egg. The icing however was excellent. I used 1 1/4 cup less of the powdered sugar and thought it was the best I've ever made.

Hands down, the best chocolate cake recipe I've ever made. It was a bit messy the first time I made it but that was just because of my lack of experience icing a layer cake LOL. I've now made it a couple times and it's been a hit everytime. The icing recipe makes a very generous amount of frosting, just the way my family likes it!

I think it could use more chocolate flavor, but other than that, pretty good. Very moist cake, I iced it with PB frosting, and it held up well.

This was fairly good. What I really liked about it was that it did not require using whole chocolate bars because that tends to get quite messy. The icing was superb but the cake could have used less water. The batter was very thin and took much much more than the mentioned time to cook. The end result was fairly good. I tried making a second batch in cupcake moulds those faster to cook

This is the best cake EVER! I use the Hershey's Special Dark cocoa to make the cake "better" for me (more antioxidants!), and instead of the frosting, I use a chocolate cream cheese frosting, using 2 sticks of butter, 2-8 ounce bricks of cream cheese, 1-2 lb bag of powdered sugar, 1 c cocoa (again - the Special Dark), 1 Tbsp vanilla, and a pinch of salt. If you make a traditional cream cheese icing, and put it between the layers, then frost the outside with the chocolate cream cheese icing, it tastes JUST like an OREO in CAKE form!!!!!!!!! YUMMMMMMM!!!! (that is, IF you use the Special Dark cocoa).... Everyone who works with me requests this cake for birthdays, holidays, special occasions, etc.

This cake is so moist and dense! It was a great tasting cake, and practically foolproof. Don't worry about the thin consistency of the batter. This is made more like a pudding (lava) cake, and it WILL bake into a normally textured cake, just especially moist. Instead of 9 in. pans, I used a 13x9 and baked it for 45 minutes, and that worked beautifully, too.

Substituted espresso for the boiling water, but other than that followed the directions exactly. This turned out gorgeous- soft and fluffy and delicious. I used a chocolate ganache instead of the icing and the end result was quite impressive.

Fantastic! I had been looking for a nice basic chocolate layer cake. This one has a great texture and nice, rich chocolate taste. Most people can probably get away with only 1/2 of the frosting recipe. I like only a thin layer of frosting on my cake so I used 1/4 recipe and it was plenty for a 9x13 cake.

Very good! I was looking for a dark, rich chocolate cake for a chocolate mousse birthday cake and this fit the bill. I agree with JezthePuff, this is the recipe on the Hershey's cocoa container, but I've always liked that recipe. I had a recipe for dark chocolate mousse that I used to fill the layers (3) and covered it with chocolate ganache as recommended by other reviewers. Since the ganache and mousse had coffee, I followed other reviewers' recommendations by adding coffee instead of the boiling water. Next time I may try instant espresso since we usually don't have the morning's coffee sitting around- instant espresso would be a bit easier. The completed creation was simply divine!
