This has got to be one of the best cakes I have ever made. I am not a baker; I cook a great deal more than I bake, but I did not have any real trouble with the recipe.
I even cheated on melting the chocolate and used the microwave. If you don't have a double boiler, simply put about 2/3 of the chocolate in a microwavable bowl and set in the microwave for about 45 seconds or until it is just melted. Then simply add the rest of the chocolate and stir until it is smooth. Works just as well as the double boiler but much faster and for me much easier.
Anyway, my boyfriend's 12-year-old couldn't stop sneaking bites of the cake, and he's a terribly picky eater. Once you factor in the cooling time for the cake and the actual decoration (I'm terrible at it) it did take me about two hours. Also the ganache between the layers took a bit longer to set, closer to 30 min, but just be patient, it will firm up!! Don't ice too early, though, you'll squish the ganache everywhere and have a chocolatey mess.
Not for the impatient or amateur baker, but if you have the time and ability, this cake is FANTASTIC.
