Easy and straight forward. Date bars are nostalgic for me and this recipe takes me there. Sweet but not cloying. The dates and nuts work in balance to really bring this date bar forward. No need to "gussy up" this recipe in my opinion - it would detract from this gem. The only thing I did different was use unprocessed dates and unshelled nuts and only because that is what I had on hand. It significantly prolonged the process but it was well worth it in the end.

This is the exact recipe that was handed down to me from my Aunt in the 1900's. Once I separated the eggs and folded in the beaten whites at the end. Baked in a 8X11 in glass baking dish. Made a softer bar. Delicious

My husband hasn't had these in years! When his mother passed away, the recipe was lost. He said these are just like the ones he had growing up! They brought back so many good memories for him! I had never had them before and now I am a fan.

I believe this might be the long lost recipe of my dreams!! When I was little my grandma and I would make these every Christmas. She would tell me how special it was I could help her, as she made these with my mom as a little girl. When she died the recipe was lost. I have looked and looked for something the same. After coming across this last xmas I was truely excited! I made them exactly as your recipe stated and cried while eating them! Thank you so much for sharing this and giving me the missing peice of my childhood! My 5 yr old son and I will be making these this yr and I hope this tradition will continue thanks to you! Merry Christmas!

You can't beat the old recipes! Be sure and use kitchen shears to cut up the dates, so much easier. Very tasty. We ate for breakfast with our coffee.

I cut this recipe in half and used an 8" x 8" square pan to make 16 bars. I omitted salt, but followed the rest of the recipe exactly. DELISH..definitely a keeper. I also appreciated the story behind the recipe. Thanks Margaret!

YUM! YUM! These bars were delicious as is. They were chewy and moist and not as messy as the traditional crumb-topped date bars which is what I was originally looking for. I used whole dates and chopped them up. Walnuts were the perfect accompaniment. This date bar recipe is definitely a keeper. THANKS FOR POSTING IT!!!!

These turned out really well, but resembled bread more so than a "bar". I am wondering if maybe I also confused the amount of butter to be used as did others.
