Date Nut Bars
SUBMITTED BY:

"I've had this recipe since 1938, when the girls I worked with game me a bridal shower. One of their presents was a recipe box filled with their favorites. Inside, I found this recipe, and I've used it for just about every occasion since. They're always well received."

The "base" of this recipe is perfect as is, thus the five stars. When I happened to make them, however, we had an excess of raisins on hand and also my oldest son had been lobbying hard for something with coconut, so I added some of both. Heaven. Absolute heaven. Every single person in our extended family insisted that I HAD to write this recipe in the hard copy cookbook and promise to make it OFTEN! (And if you knew my family, you would know that the chances of winning the lottery are better than all of them even liking something, much less raving about it!) Again, the basic flavor of this bar is amazing. So feel free to experiment with additions and combinations with confidence -- I can't imagine a dried fruit or a nut that wouldn't be delicious in it.

I got this recipe from my mother-in-law upon request from my husband- he won't have a Christmas without them! I couldn't find the recipe this year, thanks for posting it. These bars are perfect exactly as is, no modifications necessary!

I love these! They are chewy and wonderful. I sprinkled powdered sugar over them, and I think I will leave them without next time, as they are plenty sweet on their own.I will make these again, for sure. I also will play with this recipe and add other kinds of fruit and maybe some coconut, as another reviewer suggested. These are easy to make and wonderful :)

I have made these bars twice; once with 2 cups of sugar and once with 1 cup of sugar. I think these bars are delicious both ways, but if you prefer a crunchy top make this recipe as stated. These bars keep well and are delicious with coffee or tea. I am sure you will enjoy them.

Very good. My Dad loves date nut skillet cookies at Christmas, but they were so hot that they burned my hands last Christmas. This looked like most of the same ingredients and he really liked them. Thank you!

I made these vegan-style for my mom and sister, and they loved them. I just used egg replacer and a banana for the egg and unsalted margarine for the butter. Yummy and very different!
