Okay, I did change this quite a bit. First, I had no whole wheat flour. (I thought I did when I chose this recipe.). So, I substituted the same amount of instant low-sugar apple oatmeal. Also, for half of the sugar, I used brown sugar. I used slightly more melted butter than it called for, and a few tablespoons of canola oil. I'm glad I did, because it would have been too dry without the added fat. (I imagine using the instant oatmeal substantially increased the dryness of the batter) I also added a few tablespoons of flake coconut. Also, I was out of milk (!), so I subbed regular half and half for about a 2/3 of the milk it called for, and the rest was water. I think that probably evened out to about whole milk. Finally, I didn't follow their recipe for crumbs at all. I used approximately equal amounts of brown and white sugar, softened butter, white flour, and one packet of instant apple oatmeal. I added a bit of cinnamon and salt. I mixed it all in the stand mixer until crumbly. It was parfait, and much better than the crumbs in this recipe would have been. If you learn anything from my review, know that you can sub things here and there, as long as you have a good moisture balance, and adequate leavening.

YUMMMM! I have a five and three year and they gobbled these up. I did not have any granola so I subbed quick oats. They turned out good. I added some butter to the topping mix so the oats would stick together a little better. Also, we have a nut allergy in our house so the walnuts were out and it was fine. We have a new favorite muffin recipe. Thank you!

I doubled this recipe and as I did not have any granola on hand, I substituted some oat flake cereal that I crushed. Good recipe. I think next time I need to use an apple with more tartness. Great topping!

These are SO good! I doubled the recipe and made good sized muffins and ended up with 16. They were easy and the crunchy topping is perfect, I used bare-naked low fat granola for it :) I will definately be making these again :)

Really, really fantastic. Looking at the batter I was sure I'd done something wrong -- it was so dense! But they fluffed up and tasted awesome!

I added more cinnamon as was suggested but the muffins still lacked flavor.

These muffins were great. I didn't have any granola on hand, so I just used rolled oats and it was delicious (and lower fat). I did have to double the topping recipe to cover all 12 normal-sized muffins. I will be making these again.

Yummy. Tasty yet healthy (or at least healthiER!) Did not peel apples since I prefer it that way. My husband normally does not like muffins but went for this one. I did have to add a touch of hot water to moisten up the batter enough (maybe 2 TBS but I did not measure), and yes you should double the cinnamon for sure. NEXT DAY: These taste gross after 24 hours, so definately eat them warm the same day.

Mmm! Yummy! I substituted applesauce for the oil and eggs and used all whole wheat flour and brown sugar. I used a medium-sized granny smith apple, and it came out great...I was especailly a fan of the sweet crunchy topping. Taking the other reviwers' advice, I added a bit more cinnamon to the topping and batter. Thank you Elaine, these were GREAT!!!

I wasn't a fan of this recipes, I think that it was a little to dense. I brought it to a brunch and other people commented that they really enjoyed it. To each their own.

These were pretty good. Not dry like I thought they'd be. They are healthy, but need just a little more "umph" or flavor. I thought they were missing something.

The students in my Nutrition and Wellness classes made these muffins as part of their fruit/breakfast unit and had only great comments! We made them in regular size muffin tins and came out with 10-12 muffins per batch. Their only comment was that they would have liked more of the crunchy granola topping.
