Hey Cathy, New to the site but been around the culinary world for quite awhile, this is one of the simple basic recipes that really hits home, I substituted the onion with a 1/4 shallot. Thank you! Fred

Great recipe and very versatile. I make it all the time for at-home salads. I save myself from having to wash out a blender by just mixing the ingredients in a cup and leaving out the onion. Voila; instant italian!

This recipe was just what I was looking for. The taste is almost identical to the house dressing at my favorite local italian restaurant. Wonderful!

We followed the recipe exactly. This was very good. We put it on a basic tossed salad with head lettuce and a bit of romaine. It is a bit sweet.

I have been making this dressing for probably 30 years now. I got it from the label on the mayo jar. It is absolutely the BEST! I do mine in the blender, and I use a little less than 1/2 cup chopped onion. Always a white onion, never a red one. As Cathy stated, if you will follow the recipe, and use the ingredients listed, you will get a great dressing. If you choose to use (for instance) garlic salt instead of garlic powder, and then omit the salt, the dressing just will not turn out like it should. I have a tendency to "guess" at some of my measurements when cooking certain dishes, however, there are some recipes that need to be adhered to exactly in order for it to turn out. This is one of those recipes. I make a simple salad using mixed greens, grape tomatoes, and black olives. I pour the desired amount of dressing over the salad and mix to coat. Then I sprinkle it with a little dried dill weed. It is a perfect match with any Italian dish.

I made it per the instructions and the set of tips that Cathy posted afterwards and really enjoyed it. I ended up using Splenda rather than regular sugar and I added a little more vinegar to taste and tried to be conservative with the (yellow) onion.

Unbelievably good!! I just made it a few minutes ago because every dressing in my fridge looked incredibly unappetizing. This was just perfect. I eased up on the onion, only because I didn't have much, as well as the red wine vinegar. I also used 1/2 c light mayo and 1/2 miracle whip light because that was all I had. Really fantastic stuff! Thanks!

Cathy, I use this dressing a LOT because I can never find a creamy Italian dressing that I like. I think it's perfect the way it is (being Italian), especially if you follow the directions. My mother used to make it this way and I just never watched her close enough. Thanks for sharing! PS--those I haved served it to for dinners absolutely love it!

This was good, but the vinegar made it a bit sharp for my clan. I didn't have the time for the blender, so I added 2 T. of minced dried onion. A teaspoon of basil added a nice touch. Update: I made this again, but this time used the food processor. It was excellent, creamy and tasty and not sharp at all. Only make this if you have the time to do it right.

Delicious! I used light mayo but otherwise followed the recipe exactly and it was great. It's better than any store bought dressing.

Good basic recipe. I don't like my dressing so tangy so next time I will reduce the red wine vinegar to less than half. Usw whatever combiation of herbs you have on hand if you don't have italian seasoning. I used parsley, thyme, rosemary, and oregano. Add the sugar gradually to your liking.

I made this and brought it to an office luncheon yesterday and it was a big hit. Everyone wanted the recipe! I took the recipe writer's suggestion and used about 1/4 cup chopped of a mild white onion and we didn't find the onion taste overpowering at all. I will keep this recipe in by recipe box for sure!

really, really good. i sent the onion through the grating blade on my food processor and then switched blades before adding the rest of the ingredients. it really minced the onion, almost liquified some of it. i used it in a pasta salad with olives, tomatoes, grated carrots, and cheddar cheese. the boyfriend loved it too!

Really liked this dressing! I had to sub white wine vinegar for red because that's what I had and I used a little more fresh ground pepper because that's what we like. Next time I will omit the sugar or scale it back. Used on a pasta salad and it was delish!

I would just like to say I am a salad dressing freak and was just making a salad for a party i have to go to tomorrow and ran out of my usual dressing and just decided to try something a bit different and came across your recipe and decided to try it as i had all the ingridients needed. I always make my own salad dressings but dont usually make creamy ones. This dressing is fantastic! I loved it! so much so i kept licking the blender once i bottled it!! Great recipe Cathy!! two thumbs up from a huge salad dressing critic!

LOVED this dip with a minor adjustment. After reading submitter's update on this recipe, I used on 1/4 cup minced yellow onion. After tasting, it still had a stronger onion flavor than my family would like. I added an additional 1/4 cup of mayo and a teaspoon of sugar. We like the recipe better than the C.I.Dressing II. My family really enjoyed this and they are big ranch dressing fans, so this dressing really made an impression!
