So here's what I did. I sliced the potatoes and the onions very thin - this reduced the cook time to about an hour. I used more butter and more cheese than the recipe called for, resulting in very tender potatoes and onions - perhaps this is why I didn't have a problem with the onion rings as so many others do - they were completely soft and I barely noticed them! I say add spices to suit whatever your tastes are - I seasoned the potatoes with seasoning salt, black pepper, garlic powder and cajun seasoning, and also added garlic powder and black pepper to the cheese sauce. The result: The best potatoes I've ever had! I will definitely make these again and again. Deeee-lish!!

1st time I have ever made Au Gratins from scratch and they were perfect! 5 stars because: this recipe was easy and called for ingredients I had on hand plus it was "company worthy." Definite keeper.

Good recipe. My only mistake was adding extra cheese on top (my mistake, not the recipe), which made it a little greasy. Overall very good though!

I make this all the time now...it's great. The only change I made was to chop the onions, instead of the larger sliced rings. It will look a little greasy and runny when you pull it out of the oven, I just stir it in the dish and that quickly goes away. I also had no cheddar cheese tonight and made it with shredded taco cheese blend and it tasted the same...whew!

It was a little bland a bit too runny to way this recipe says to make it. We tweeked it a bit and OMG! I suggest you try or tweek it to what you would think sounds good. We cut the milk amount in half and the other half was replaced by heavy whipping cream, for the thickness and creaminess. We also used 1/2c. of medium cheddar and 1/2c. of sharp cheddar, makes them amazingly rich, but not too rich. You'll still want to go back for seconds. After the dish is finished baking we removed it fom the oven, put crumpled lays potatoe chips on top and put in broiler until browned and a bit crispy. Great crust and just finishes off the dish perfect. Not a fan of those chips but in this recipe wouldn't have it any other way. My husband should market his recipes, I swear! This one gets *****!

This was a great recipe, but I can never follow any recipe exactly without making my own additions. I chopped the onions and sauteed them in the butter with some fresh pressed garlic...garlic makes everything better! Then I made it the rest of the way like it says in the recipe. Everyone who ate them loved them!!

This was very good, there was no left overs. I will be experimenting with different chesses (as we all love chesse in my house). I am sure every time I make it, it will get better and better. Thanks!

I have made this recipe 2x so far, I can only stress how important it is to use russet potatoes (first time I had butter potatoes to use up and it came out blech). The 2nd time I also, like others, chose to increase the amount of the cheese sauce but added slice leeks and diced ham in the layering, it was a total meal and delicious.

this was my first time making this recipe and I took it to a potluck. I used a mixture of Italian blend cheeses and sharp cheddar and it came out really well. The only change that I would make would be to add a little more salt and pepper. potatoes are like salt sponges, they soak up all of the salt and made it taste a tiny bit bland. I added xtra salt and pepper on my serving, and it was perfect. Everyone enjoyed it! Also, for any meat-eaters, adding ham would be great as well.

Everyone loved it! Like others I minced onions, layered potatoes and seasoned each layer with salt, pepper and a little grated cheese. When dish was half full I i poured in some cheese sauce and continued layering. When dish was full poured on additioanl cheese sauce and topped with crushed seasoned croutons. I doubled cheese sauce recipe and used left over sauce for mac and cheese. Little ones loved it!

Just perfect! I was in a rush and took the advice of earlier reviewer and partially cooked the potato slices in the microwave first. I used sharp cheddar and was very pleased with the results. Will keep this recipe for future use.

My family LOVED this recipe! I did make some small adjustments to the recipe. I cooked the onions in olive oil so they would be fully cooked as the kids do not like raw onion. I also added approximately three ounces of cream cheese to the cheese sauce. The end result was a very creamy, cheesy potato dish that my family gobbled up quickly. Thank you KathyM!
