Very good recipe, but use a bigger dish. I used a 1 1/2 quart glass dish and it was filled to the brim.

Okay so i didn't put as much cheese, and I needa double the sauce next time. They are a very good bases for au gratin poatoes.. I put rosemary, paprika, garlic and a huge onion in the tators.. and it was great.. I love spices.. I recommend not just basing something on chz (hint the 499 calorie count) and upping the flavor with spices (which are 0 calorie count).... But over all GREAT RECIPE.. i have tons of left overs and wil make more again!!!!!

I thought that this recipe was great! But my family doesn't like onions, so I left out the onion. They are great without the onion. My family loves them! Great dish! I plan on adding this to my Thanksgiving Dinner menu. Amazing!

Good basic recipe. I minced the onion instead of making rings. Taste was bland - needs more seasoning.

Just what I was looking for! I took some small suggestions from other reviews; diced onion, pouring sauce in layers, and the addition of garlic. The result was spectacular! Thanks for sharing your recipe!

I quadrupled this recipe and added ham to make as a main dish. I put about a teaspoon of garlic powder in the sauce and used mozarella instead of cheddar because cheddar isn't available in the Andes Mts. I also sprinkled onion powder over each potato layer instead of fresh onion - to make it more appealing to my children. Very delicious.

Wonderful!! This was my first attempt at potatoes au gratin, and I am quite proud of the results. I made them almost exactly as described, but I did cut up the onion instead of leaving it as rings. To the people that cooked the onion first afraid of it being raw: it's going into a 400F oven for 90 mins, it WILL get cooked. My cheese did separate, but I think that's just the cheese I chose. I took the foil off with 20mins to go for the browned top. Super delicious.

This was great! Next time around I'll add in some more seasonings, but as far as a base recipe... excellent!

I have made this several times and it never disappoints! It is hands down the best recipe for au gratin potatoess... Vary the cheese for different tastes.

Yummy recipe. I, too, made a few slight changes. Like many others suggested, I diced the onions instead of slicing them. I also softened them in the butter along with one clove of fresh, minced garlic before adding the flour to make the rue -- I added 1/4 tsp of black pepper to the rue for added flavor. I used a 2qt casserole, layered 1/3 of the sliced potatoes and topped with 1/3 the onion/cheese sauce, and repeated this step twice. I, too, removed the foil with about 30 minutes remaining in the cooking time and topped with buttered bread crumbs before putting it back in the oven for the final 30 minutes. Loved this recipe! Next time, I'm going to try a "grown up" version using Gruyere cheese!

I made these potatoes today and I think they were the best that I have ever made. I used Velveeta instead of shredded cheese and it turned out so creamy. Thanks for the recipe.

Great comfort food. I omitted the onions because we don't do onions. Make sure your main dish has great flavor as this does not have a strong taste. I use sharp cheddar. Don't try the microwave shortcut with the potatoes unless you absolutely know what you're doing -- it made my cheese sauce fail to be creamy (separated). Also, doubling the sauce recipe may cause you to spend more time heating the sauce than you think is necessary.

I thought this was very good. It was super easy to prepare and turned out good. It was a bit runny so I may have done something wrong but I will try it again. Even if it turns out runny, I'll still eat it because it was really good! ;)

We loved these potatoes. I diced the onions instead of slicing them and mixed some cheese with a little bread crumbs to add on top. I also took the cover off for the last 15 minutes to brown it up. Delicious!!

As delicious as this sounded to make, I was SO tempted to bake it without the foil covering for the last 20 minutes or so, and maybe I will because my family LOVES a crispy coating on potatoes au gratin, but just as it is this is an outstandingly good and easy to prepare receipe. YUMM!!!
