This is perhaps not the ultimate cake, but it is very, very good. We substitute WHOLE WHEAT and RAW SUGAR for a healthier version of this, and it is very good that way, though we pull it out a little before it can 'pass' the toothpick test. Be sure to crush all baking powder lumps! We have found that sometimes the flour needs more moisture, but I can't tell when, so when we use whole wheat, we simply add a half to a whole extra cup of water, and given a tad extra time, it bakes down to the proper moisture without any trouble (otherwise, sometimes we have to add more water after the initial stirring, which leads to a more tough/dense cake). Love this best with cherry pie filling and chocolate chip ice cream - on rare occasions we splurge that much. Yummmm!
