This was delish! I used frozen green beans, bacon instead of ham, chicken broth instead of water, and shallots instead of onion.

These were a great way to jazz up beans, easy too! Instead of ham, I used the Daystarters cooked turkey slices . I also used butter. I used frozen green beans, and the time listed here was too long, so mine ended up a bit mushy. But they still tasted wonderful!

This is a great recipe as written, but the second time I made it I did a little alteration. I cooked up a few pieces of bacon and then chopped the bacon and used the bacon pieces rather than ham and a spoonful of bacon grease rather than the butter. I also used chicken stock rather than water. These were exactly like the green beans I remember as a kid that my southern "grandma" used to make. The whole family raved about them.

Very tasty, even with canned green beans. Also recommend bacon over ham, as suggested by others. I sprinkled with sesame seeds before serving.

I love this recipe!!!! Sometimes I add olive oil instead of the butter and also add mushrooms. My family will now finally eat green beans. Thanks for a great recipe.

A great way to use up a little leftover holiday ham! I omitted the butter and used chicken broth - very flavorful! The kids gobbled up their veggies. Thanks!

SOOOO Easy, I used whole canned green beans, and rinsed them with water, and subsituted the salt w/ seasoned salt... popped them in the microwave until the onions were tender and my soul-food lovin' family gave me 2 thumbs up!!

I made this as a part of our Christmas meal. I followed it exactly except I omitted the meat since I had no ham or bacon. Other reviewers seemed to think it was great without it. They were correct IMHO! Everyone else said they were "good". I think these were one of the best tasting green beans I ever ate. I live in a big city with plenty of varieties of tasty eateries. But this blend of veggies just worked great! I must admit though that I do like onions and garlic. I know lots of people don't like or are intestinally bothered by these veggies so they shy away from some dishes. But if your OK with them then you REALLY should give this recipe a try. Thanks for posting it! John

I made this for Christmas lunch, and it turned out great. I ran out of onions, so couldn't add those, and used serrano ham (like prosciutto) instead of cooked ham, chicken broth instead of water (and left out the salt), and a lot less butter. It was very easy and tasty, and my guests liked it. Will definitely make this again.

This recipe is great. It gives the green beans so much flavor. The ham and garlic are a nice touch.

Absolutely LOVED these! I added one more clove of garlic and took the advice of others and used chicken broth. I also omitted the ham simply because i didn't have any on hand. Hubby said they were the best green beans he has ever had! Will make again!

Fantastic!!! I had 2 cans of french style green beans and needed a side dish tonight....quick! I used deli ham and it turned out delicious! I didn't add water...just used the liquid from the can. Thank you for helping me to avoid a trip to the market! :)
