I made this cake once. The cake itself was pretty good, it was tasty. Only the frosting DID NOT have the right consistency. It was more like a glaze and it wouldn't stay on the sides of the cake so I only frosted the top. My family said it was delicious, but it just didn't taste like the red velvet cake we all know and love. The frosting definitely sucked. My cake looked horrible!!! I was so mad, but I just covered it up with strawberries. It was good for the first time, but I think I'm trying a different recipe for the next.

This wasn't a big hit at our house. It was pretty dry, crumbly and wasn't very chocolately despite some extra cocoa. It was better after sitting 2 days but we will keep looking for a good red velvet recipe.

I just made this for my husband's birthday since this is his favorite cake. It was my first time baking a red velvet cake. I give it 4 star because the cake recipe was wonderful but the frosting needs work. The cake had an amazing taste and was very moist. I made a few modifications as others suggested: didn't have the cake flour so I used 2 cups of regular flour, sifted; used 1 1/2 tsp of baking soda; didn't have butter flavoring so I used 1/4 cup butter, melted; and added 1/2 cup sour cream. However, I was disappointed by the frosting. It was way too sweet and had that grainy sugary texture. My husband and I like a full-bodied cream cheese flavor and all the sugar masked that, so I'll be looking for another cream cheese frosting recipe but I loved the cake. Will definitely be making again with different frosting.

I only made the frosting for this cake. I used a different one for the cake. The frosting is the lightest, fluffiest best tasting that I've ever made.

This was my first time making a cake from scratch. I found the recipe easy to follow. I followed everything exactly as stated. The cake came out great. Everyone loved it. It was moist and the frosting was wonderful. Only thing I did add was some chopped pecans on top of the cake. I will be making this again. Thanks for the great recipe

i tried this cake twice because so many people liked it, and so did i, until the next day. the first time i made it for someone else and tasted the part i trimmed off. it was so good! then they told me when they ate it, it was dry. i was very disappointed, but tried it again for a bake sale. i made cupcakes and was extremely careful not to overbake them. the night i made them they were fantastic! the next morning (yes, i ate it for breakfast!) they were dry, dry, dry. not sure what is going on, i'm not a novice at cake making, but i'm moving on in hopes of a better recipe!
