This was ok, but not great. The cake was kind of dry. I doubt I'll make it again.

OMG this was so good. Made it as a trial run for my boyfriend's birthday next month, and we both loved it. I'm not a huge fan of cake anyway, but this was great. I skipped the chocolate chips on top because I plan on making a really good caramel frosting. Mmm! Nice and moist, I didn't change a thing. When you add the room temperature chocolate and ice water, you get little flecks of chocolate making a lovely 'sparkly looking' cake. Update: Made this again for my son's birthday. Doubled the recipe and made a two-layer. Left out the chocolate chips again (made Vanilla - Chocolate Powdered Sugar Frosting from this site), and at the birthday boy's request, added bananas; a layer between the cake layers and more along the sides and on top. I didn't even get to taste it; it was demolished!

I don't know why reviews for this cake are mixed because this cake is really good. When I make it, I don't use baking chocolate because it isn't something that I ususally have on hand so I use 6 T cocoa and 2 T vegetable oil to substitute for the baking chocolate and it always turns out perfect. This is definitely a chocolate lovers cake.

This should be called chocolate chip cake because when the chocolate was melted and then added to the batter it hardened and the batter became speckled. It's not a dark chocolate cake that I normally like it was a light colored cake with chocolate speckles through it. I made it with applesauce and it turned out moist, but I don't think I'd make it again because there are too many dark chocolate cake recipes out there.

This did not look like a chocolate cake or taste like one.
