DIRECTIONS
In a bowl, combine milk and extract. Stir in 3-1/2 to 4 cups confectioners' sugar to form a stiff dough. Turn onto a surface sprinkled lightly with confectioners' sugar. Knead in enough remaining sugar to form a dough that is very stiff and no longer sticky. Shape into 1-in. balls. Place on a waxed paper-lined baking sheet. Flatten into 1-1/2-in. circles. Let dry 1 hour. Turn and let dry 1 hour longer. Melt chocolate chips and shortening in a double boiler or microwave-safe bowl; cool slightly. Dip patties in chocolate mixture and place on waxed paper to harden.

If you are looking for a good peppermint patty recipe you have come to the right place. These are great. Here might be some helpful tips: 1. if your dough is a bit on the crumbly side try rolling the balls with your hands slightly damp. be careful.. too much H20 and they will stick to your hands... just enough and it will help them keep their shape. 2. Some of the reviewers said they had problems with the patties falling apart or melting when they dipped it in the chocolate. I have two tips for this.. make sure the chocolate has cooled.. I would say at least 5-10 min. Also.. stick the patties in the freezer for a few minutes before coating them. I stuck the whole tray in and pulled them out a few at a time. I didn't have any problems with them falling apart or melting. 3. Finally I tried the chopstick idea for dipping the patties, but felt the sticks left marks in the surface of the chocolate...so I used a 2 pronged fork and it worked great for flipping the patties, for lifting them out and setting them down. It made it relatively easy. I made a double batch for Christmas and it made approximately 100 patties. Some of mine were too big though. These really taste wonderful!

My next door neighbor when I was kid made this exact mint recipe. However she did a couple of things different. Instead of shortening, she used about a 1/3 of a bar of wax. The type you use for canning in with chips when she melted them. The other thing she did different is make small balls instead of patties. She then stuck a toothpick into each ball and froze them just until they were a bit harder and the toothpick did not slide out. I do this same thing every time I make them and they turn out great and look like little chocolate bon-bons.

I've been making these candies for years, ever since I learned how to do it as a child. This is probably one of my most favorite candies to make during the Christmas season. It's great to include the kids, too. TIP: I usually add a couple crushed candy canes for a contrast in texture and more peppermint flavor.

I made these with my daughter's Girl Scout troop for a bake sale - they had fun shaping the patties. For dipping, smaller, thicker patties work best. Use chopsticks to handle the patties - we used kid-friendly type of chopsticks that are joined at the top. Drop the patties flat on the melted chocolate, then flip. Scrape excess chocolate off the bottom of the candy.

These turned out just fine....like any typical Pepermint Pattie recipe they are a bit tricky and messy, yet these turned out very tasty, I disguised my rather messy chocolate coating by decorating them with white chocolate lines afer the milk chocolate had set....

This recipe is simple and a crowd pleaser -- I've made it 3 times so far. The inside part does take time to dry as the recipe indicates -- it's better to increase the time to 2 hours per side if possible. Also, I'm not a very skilled dipper, so I make smaller patties (about silver dollar sized), and I dip first the perimeter, then each side, with drying time inbetween, and it looks nicer. I also add a bit of milk or cream to the chocolate for smoother dipping. These are way better than York peppermint patties!

i just dipped these, and they look amazing. I used a wire egg dipper that is used to dye easter eggs, and it was so easy. I also used an offset spatula to slide them onto wax paper. I can't wait to taste them!!

Yum... delicious. It will be so nice to give these as gifts for Chirstmas. I had trouble with the mint melting when dipped into the chocolate so this is what I did: 1.Put the mint in the freezer after forming into patties. 2.Use a soup spoon to hold the mint and a small spoon to pour the chocolate onto the mint. Use the small spoon to smooth the top and wipe excess off on big spoon; then when you do the next mint, swipe the bottom of the mint on the glob on the bottom of big spoon and proceed as above. I made the mint mixture in my mixer and ended up needing to use the dough hook. Thanks for the lovely recipe.

I had fun with this. I haden't made X-mas cookies and candies for a few years, so I decided to put together a few items this year. I've been in the kitchen all day, and you'd think this being the final project I'd be ready to get it done! I did concoct a dipping spoon out of a metal skewer I had, it's in the photo I posted. I colored my mints pink and green, and really wanted a little color in this presentation, so I didn't dip some of them, I just piped a little chocoloate squiggle on the tops. I believe it will package well. Thanks for the recipe. Oliver, my mint lover will flip over these!

What a simple yet impressive holiday recipe. I tinted the filling green for Christmas, and I'll try pastels for Easter. Be careful not too add to much sugar or they will be a little dry.
