Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 48 walnut halves

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. Cream shortening, butter or margarine, and sugar together. Add egg and molasses, mix well.
  3. Sift together dry ingredients, add to shortening mixture, alternating with hot water. Mix well.
  4. Drop by rounded teaspoons onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 8-10 minutes. Remove from cookie sheet, cool. Frost with Butter Frosting and top each cookie with a walnut.
