It's easy. It's always good, even if the strawberries are mediocre and store brand chocolate is used. I love this recipe because it can be simple or fancy, and it's really simple to make. I agree with other comments that suggested melting the crisco first, and making sure the boiling water does not touch the top pan in the double boiler.

This recipe was simple and worked perfectly for my chocolate covered strawberries!! I do not own a double boiler so I just put a small amount of water in a pot and placed the chocolate and shortening directly into a smaller pot. Then I put this pot into the larger one with the water. It melted quickly and easily and tasted great. I dipped each strawberry and placed them on some parchment paper. This went directly into the fridge and then after it set (20 minutes or so) I placed them directly on my cheesecake and used the leftover chocolate to drizzle the entire cheesecake!

Also, like another reviewer said, the strawberries should be dried off with paper towels before dipping. I had made chocolate frosting and had leftover in the freezer, which i heated in the microwave, hulled & washed berries, dried them then dipped in the chocolate frosting and set to dry, came out great.

I made these for my husband on Valentines day. But I the kids liked them so much that they ended up mowing through them. My poor husband only got to eat one.

This was a great recipe. The only problem I had was that it made waaay too much chocolate for 1 lb of strawberries. I ended up making chocolate-toffee candies and chocolate covered pretzles too..which were both great :)

Since I don't have a double-boiler, I put a glass bowl on top of simmering water. Making this dish this way is tricky since I don't have much control over the temperature. After dipping about 6 strawberries, the temperature of the bowl gets too hot and the chocolate starts getting gloppy and grainy. To fix the consistency of the chocolate, I have to add a little bit of cold water (to cool the chocolate down) and stir it up again. I added Amaretto Di Saronno to half of the chocolate. For the other half, I added Grand Marnier. Yum.

Cut out the shortening. Used 3 different melted dips: white chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, and peanut butter w/ milk chocolate. Dippings: shredded coconut, toffee bits, hazelnuts, sliced almonds, and nut topping. Melted chocolate in separate containers in microwave. Dipped strawberries in. Dipped in dipping bowls. Placed on parchment paper on cookie sheet and put in fridge. Fancier than the store-bought ones! Perfect valentine's day dessert!

These were great. I used a little less then 2 Tbsp of shortening because the bag of chips was only 11 oz. I didn't have a double boiler or a stainless steel bowl, so i melted them in the microwave at half power for one minute, then stirred. i then microwaved then for 30 seconds at half power, stirred and repeated that one more time. They were almost completely melted, so I just kept stirring until they were smooth. The chocolate was perfect, not clumpy at all, I think the shortening really helps make it smooth.

I omitted the shortening from the recipe; the chocolate was thicker to dip still worked out fine. One tip: I put my dipped strawberries in the freezer to set the chocolate since the temp inside my kitchen was a little warm. BIG MISTAKE! I went off and forgot them in there and ruined the fruit (obviously)...Next time I'll just put them in the fridge.
