Simply excellent. The shortening gives the chocolate a silkiness that chocolate-only lacks. Someone made the suggestion to not let the water touch the bottom of the bowl the chocolate is in to prevent seizing and that is important advice. If you don't own a double-boiler, just heat water in a regular pot and place a metal mixing bowl over the top. Melting chocolate in the microwave is a short-cut that rarely has good results. The stove-top method is very easy... I put the water on to boil and once boiling, reduced to simmer and the chocolate was perfect for the entire session. Dip your pretzel, cookie or fruit, shaking carefully to get rid of excess chocolate and roll in sprinkles or crushed peppermints if desired. Wonderful recipe!

This recipe is amazing for not only strawberries, but anything else! I have dipped marshmallows, shortbread cookies, pretzels and more using this recipe. The shortening allows the melteed chocolate to be a great dipping consistency. So, when asked for melted chocolate in any other recipe, remember 1 tbsp of shortening to 1 c. of chocolate chips!

I made this with the shortening and while I didn't taste one myself everyone said they were great and I do think the shortening helped to melt the chocolate and with the dipping. I just put them on waxed paper to set rather than the styrofoam as suggested here. I did melt some white chips with a tiny bit of shortening and used a wooden skewer to drizzle the chocolate on top and I think it makes them look really special. This is a very easy recipe with professional-looking results.

I used the ingredients in this recipe. I heated the chocolate mixture in the microwave, then dipped the strawberries by holding their stems. I just set each one on wax paper and put them in the fridge to help harden the chocolate quickly. They were a hit!

Excellent recipe! This is the second time I have made these, and the first time they were a huge hit. I have used a pyrex dish over a pot with boiling water as a makeshift double boiler, and it was worked just fine. For anyone making them the first time, white chocolate is a bit more difficult to melt than the milk chocolate, and you may need to add a tiny bit more shortening. Also, the first time I made these I used Ghirardelli chocolate chips (white/milk). The second time I used IGA milk chocolate chips...huge difference! Although they set, the chocolate did not set as well. Spend the few extra dollars and buy the better brand chocolate...its worth it in the end!

Out of all the recipes I've tried for chocolate covered strawberries this is by far the best! It's easy and simple and hard to mess up! This is a keeper!

I didn't use shortening(it just freaks me out) so I wasn't able to keep the strawberries out for very long without them melting. Instead I just covered them with chocolate, froze them for about 30 min, and served them with heart shaped pancakes and syrup for a fabulous Mother's Day breakfast. I probably couldn't have taken them out of the house since they lacked shortening so definitely use the shortening if you plan on transporting them. If not, just freeze them! They're divine with dark chocolate but I just don't like milk chocolate.

The strawberries came out great. It was very easy to do. However, I had problems storing them overnight. I read that you should refrigerate them but then I read that you shouldn't refrigerate them. So I didn't and they leaked on the bottom. They still tasted great but didn't look very good. I guess I'll try refrigerating them next time.

Wonderful recipe! Around here, chocolate covered strawberries are very expensive. These are even better than the strawberries from the chocolate store! Thanks for sharing this.

Fantastic! So easy to do and it looked so professional. Great for Mother's Day! I drizzled white chocolate on top too. I did have a problem when I tried to melt the white chocolate in the micro. and ended up using some Wilton white chocolate melts in the micro. instead. The double boiler worked great for both semi-sweet and dark chocolate. I took someone else's advice and used Ghirardelli and it turned out great!

This was easy, I doubled the receipe and followed it to a T and it came out perfect. I melted the chocolate in a tin bowl within a pan of boiling water.
