Absolutely delicious! I'm new to making bread, so cheated and used a breadmaker instead of doing it by hand. I just put all the wet ingredients into the maker first (beat the eggs), then added the dry ingredients, made a well in the flour and put in the yeast, then turned the breadmaker on. I must mention that I did add only 3/4 tsp of salt as 1tbsp seemed too much to me. I also used canola/olive oil instead of vegetable, as that is all I had in the pantry.
An hour later, I had a beautifully risen and smooth ball of dough. I 'punched it down' just as the recipe instructed, and from that point on did as the recipe said (dividing it up, and braiding it).
When the loaves were done rising, I topped with the beaten egg/water mixture, and sprinkled on a wealth of poppy seeds, then put them in the oven to bake.
When the loaves came out of the oven they looked absolutely mouth-wateringly delicious! As a novice bread-baker, I am so proud of what I've been able to make. This really is a fantastic, fool-proof recipe. The dough was smooth and elastic, and once baked the bread was super light, fluffy and airy. It turned out perfectly, although perhaps next time I'll add a tad more sugar as it lost a lot of sweetness after the baking (the dough tasted sweet but once cooked it wasn't as sweet). I'm not sure whether I would have been quite as successful had I attempted to do it by hand, but it's good to know that the breadmaker can be an effective aide. Will definitely make this again!
