I've made this twice now. The first time was really runny, but the second time was much better. I learned a few things. One is to let the brown sugar and hot water sit long enough to dissolve the brown sugar. Two, instead of pouring the sugar and water over, drizzle it so the syrup soaks into the bread. When I poured it, it mostly collected on the bottom.
I did not add the 1/2 cup sugar either time and it was still really sweet!
