The missing flavor could be smoked meat. Thin-sliced smoked sausage (browned with the rice) might kick it up a notch.

I really did enjoy the taste of the finished dish, but I'm only giving a rating of 3 because I had to change and add so much. First of all, I was making this as a main dish so thought the proportion of rice to meat sounded way off... I thought using equal amounts of each would be better. In addition to the cumin, I added lots of cajun seasoning to get it to the spice level I like. I think without the cajun seasoning it would have been very bland, especially with the amount of rice the original recipe called for. I sprinkled some paprika on top to give it more color on the plate.

I thought this recipe was great. The only thing I added was more pork and a little more soy sauce. I also did this recipe again with left over pork beef and chicken to make a good combination rice.

I was looking for something to do with a leftover pork chop. I'm sorry, but this is VERY VERY BLAND! It makes WAY too much rice for the pork ratio in it. I added a BUNCH of cajun seasoning, salt, and pepper to it and I'm STILL working on it. (Hard to beat Zattaran's cajun stuff) :) I might just pick the pork out of it and use it as a base for stuffed peppers. Sorry, I will not be making this again.
