Cabbage Sloppy Joes
SUBMITTED BY:
Darlene Brenden
"'Many friends think these tangy sandwiches are regular sloppy joes,' relates Darlene Markel of Salem, Oregon. 'The crunchy cabbage is a delicious and healthy way to stretch the number of servings.'"

I used the south beach ketchup recipe and splenda instead of the brown sugar. And I substituted apple cider vinegar for the white vinegar. Wow! Is all i can say. I used to be a huge fan of the easy Manwich-canned style sloppy joes, but this truly has that beat! Thanks so much for the recipe!

What a wonderful way to get veggies into picky eaters--both kids and adults. I chopped the cabbage very fine so it was less identifiable, and no one ever suspected they were eating anything but good ol' sloppy joes. This one is a keeper!

This is my new favorite sloppy joe recipe! My family couldn't even taste the cabbage, and I loved that the sauce is not too sweet like others we've tried. Thank you!

I cannot believe I have never made sloppy joes before. I had half a head of cabbage left from the garden and this was a delish way to use it up. Next time I will cut back on the sugar though.

These were tasty! I loved the cabbage. As a vegetarian, I used GimmeLean Ground Beef Style as a meat replacement and it worked out great. The only thing I would change is use less brown sugar in the sauce. It was almost too sweet. Maybe just two tbsp of sugar.

This was the best sloppy joe I have ever had. My husband and my kids agree as well. The cabbage is a wonderful addition and the kids have no idea that they are eating some veggies. My 7 yr old went back for 2nds wc is rare. Thank you for a simple and budget friendly meal.

GREAT recipe. I used extra lean ground turkey, unsweetened ketchup, and sugar substitute. Really delicious-- enjoyed both by DH and myself. Thanks!

I adjusted the ketchup down to 1/2 c (Trader Joe's organic has no high fructose corn syrup!) and the brown sugar to 1 T and left the lemon juice out, as others had recommended. I added a whole 10 oz bag of TJ's shredded cabbage, and it wasn't too much for my family, but we loooove cabbage. I didn't have a green pepper, but I bet it would have been a nice addition and I will be sure to add it next time. (I won't add just a partial one, but the whole darn thing. Who wants to find a slimy, wrinkled partial green pepper in their fridge 10 days from now?) I agree with other cooks/reviewers that this is a not too sweet, not too tart and not too tomatoey recipe that is very satisfying. I'll make this again, fo sho.
