The texture was beautiful and the dough wasn't too sticky or too dry. However, they seemed really bland, like they needed more salt. Perhaps my calculations for halfing the recipe were off (how on earth do you measure out 1/8 cup???) but after buttering these and sprinkling them with a little extra salt, they were very good. I'd play around with them again, but definitely have plenty of salt close at hand.

Absolutely the best rolls I have ever made! I did let them rise for about a 1/2 hour or so and brushed them with butter. I did not heat the milk or use softened butter before putting into my bread machine. I baked them for the full 16 minutes. They were very light, buttery and fluffy. I will definitely be making these again.

I don't have a bread machine but I DO have a Kitchen Aid mixer, so I used that. I proofed the yeast in the mixer bowl with the sugar and the milk for ten minutes, then added the remaining liquid ingredients. After that, I then added the flour gradually. I kneaded the dough with the hook for about five minutes. I seperated the dough into 16 rolls and then put them into a greased 9x13 baking pan. I let them rise for about 45 minutes, then baked for about 20. These turned out well for me. Better than the French Bread Rolls I made last month. (Whew. Those were a disaster.) This wasn't really all that difficult for me to make without a bread machine. It wasn't the type of roll I was looking for, more of a soft bread roll. This one has more of a crumbly texture. It DOES have a wonderful flavor, don't get me wrong. What I expected should have no bearing on how good a recipe is. I urge someone who is hesitant to make a recipe that lacks a bread machine to try these. You won't be disappointed. EDITED 08/06/08: Melted a couple tablespoons of butter and brushed the top of the rolls with it. Made the rolls even better.

My first attempt at homemade rolls, and boy were they good! I don't have a bread machine, so I warmed the milk in the microwave for 45 seconds and tested with my finger (if it's too hot for bath water, let it cool a little or it'll kill the yeast). Add it to a big bowl along with the sugar then the yeast (Use one of those active yeast packets and they rise plenty). Let that sit until it doubles and looks bubbly. Melt the butter in the microwave for about 45 seconds and again tested with your finger (same principle). Add the butter to the yeast mixture and two eggs, slightly beaten and mix. In a separate bowl, mix flour and salt. Add flour mixture to yeast mixture three heaping tablespoons at a time until all is used (use it all, even if it means using the flour mixture on the board as you knead). Knead for 5 minutes, put in a buttered bowl, cover with a clean, damp dishtowel and allow to rise in a warm place for 45 minutes. Punch down, and separate into balls (they rise a lot so small balls will yield normal-sized rolls). Put on buttered cookie sheet, cover again and let rise another 45 minutes. Brush with melted butter and bake at 350 until golden brown. Yummy!!

This is an amazing roll. I will never buy store bought rolls again. I do not have a bread maker so to make it in the oven: Proof the yeast, milk and half of the sugar mixture for about 10 minutes. Add the rest of the sugar and other ingredients in a kitchen aid and yeast mixture once proofed. Knead for 6 to 8 minutes and then let rise for an hour. Follow the other directions. These are really good!!

These are excellent and so easy too. I didn't change a thing, but I did find that I had to add about 1/4 c. more flour. After forming the rolls, I let them rise in the pan for about an hour. I halved the recipe, but now I wish I hadn't. My future father-in-law ate 5 rolls in one sitting!

I have made several of the roll recipes from the site which were good, but these are the BEST. The dough is wonderful to work with, they rise beautifully, but most important they taste incredible. I followed the recipe exactly as written. This is without a doubt my new favorite recipe. Thank you.

This recipe is so good, I followed it step by step, but I kept it over night in refrigaratorafter after I left it for 1 hour to rise. The morning after I took it out 2 hours prior to baking, and left it in a warm, and dark place to rise again. They turned out perfect. Thank you for sharing this recipe.

I made them for Dad's day and they were a hit! What can I say....I have no more rolls left ;) For example, my brother-in-law alone at least ate 7 of them. I kept hearing, "these are so good". Just to let you know this was my first time making bread and using a bread machine. Oh, and I didn't make any changes to the recipe.

These were yummy rolls! I had to bake them for 20 minutes and the rolls in the middle of the pan were still a little doughy. (Might have to do with my tempermental oven!) Also, one time that I made these, I used 1 cup of whole wheat flour instead of all white flour and they were VERY delicious.

Delicious! I made twelve bigger rolls with this recipe, and we had pork BBQ sandwiches on them. My only change was to replace one cup of flour with whole wheat flour. I will use this one again and again.
