I used half white flour and half whole wheat flour, and the brownies tasted great. A little dense, and not too sweet, but it was perfect. For the icing, I read some reviews and tried to halve the recipe. I would not do that next time - there was not enough frosting, and it just looked sloppy when I spread it on the brownies. Next time, I will use the full amount.

My family loved these brownies. I doubled the recipe exactly as written, but the batter looked more like cookie dough. Worried they would come out dry, I added 1/4 c. water and 1/4 c. veg. oil to my doubled recipe, and this gave it more of a batter consistency. They took about 45 min. to bake, but came out great. Will definitely make these again.

The brownies themselves turned out so good that while they were cooling my boyfriend and I couldn't help but break off pieces of it to sample. When it actually cooled and I frosted them, I thought the frosting made them terrible. It was way too sweet at that point and we ended up scraping as much as the frosting off as we could. I would suggest leaving the brownies plain.

These were fantastic!!! This is what I did: First, I followed another commenter's advice and changed the portions to the following: Reduced the brown sugar to 3/4 cup, reduced the flour to 2/3 cup, and reduced the baking powder to 3/4 tsp. Also, the boyfriend is allergic to nuts so I substituted butterscotch chips for the walnuts. Then, I realized I definitely did not have enough filling to fill an 8 X 8 pan so I doubled the recipe, with the previous adjustments, and then added that to the first batch I made. Perfect! It came out perfectly! I was planning on adding the frosting but ended up omitting it; I think it would have made them too sweet. These definitely are really sweet. They're kind of light and airy though, so they the sweetness isn't overwhelming; it's not too rich and filling. Thank you so much for the recipe!

I suggest doubling the recipe for anything more than an inch bite of brownie.

I followed other reviewers' ideas by decreasing the brown sugar to 3/4 cup. Because some had said the brownies weren't chewy enough I added 1 tbsp cooking oil with the butter. Others had said it was too floury-tasting so I decreased the flour to 2/3 cup. And I decreased the baking powder to 3/4 tsp. Also, I baked them til they were just brown around the edges, about 23 minutes. And --- TA-DA! I ended up with moist, chewy brownies. I halved the frosting recipe, and it was just the right amount; not overly thick or sweet. What a pleasant change from chocolate brownies, with a lighter and more delicate flavor. We loved them with the recipe changes I made.

These were way too sweet. Also,I put the correct amount of flour in but they came out tasting like I put too much flour in them. Not making these again.

I don't like frosting so I just made the brownies (minus the nuts since I didn't have any on hand), and they were delicious! Buttery and sweet, but not too sweet. They deflated to half their height after I took them out of the oven, but I actually liked them better that way...I think it's what made them so chewy. I loved how simple the recipe was, and I would definitely make this again!

I doubled the recipe and used a 1&1/2 quart baking dish. Produced a nice, thick, chewy golden brownie. Yum! I didn't bother with the icing, plain is perfect. Cooking time for me was approx. 35 min. Oh, and I changed the walnuts to butterscotch chips. Enjoy!

the brownie itslef was pretty good, but very chewy. But I really dont recomend using the frosting included in the recipe. It was very gritty and just tasted like sugar. A buttercream or penuche frosting would be great on these. Or just melted butterscotch chips.

Awesome! These brownies disappeared in our home. I've been looking for a good butterscotch brownie recipe since losing my old time favorite one. This is a keeper!

These were cheap to make - just a bunch of ingredients I already had around the house. They're a little too sugary, which can be good in a way, because it keeps me from eating too many.

These were very good but VERY sweet! That might be somewhat due to the fact that i added chocolate chips instead of the walnuts but i think it would have been too sweet for my taste either way. I would make these again but cut the sugar down.

I'm in the process of making this... the batter tastes very good. I made some butterscotch brownies at the school I work at today (from a mix) and this tastes very similar! I added chocolate chips, and instead of frosting, sprinkled powdered sugar over, then topped with chocolate and carmel syrup! MMmmmm! Very good!

Yummy! I make these in a pie plate and cut them into wedges. Instead of the topping suggested I just melted some chocolate in a double boiler w/ a dab of butter and cream and spread it on top. My friends love when I make this.

I really like these. I did leave off the icing though- I wanted something that wasn't too overwhelmingly sweet. I have to remove these from my house after I make them, otherwise I'll eat them all in 24-36 hours. No joke!
