I grew up calling this "Caramel Syrup". My mom made it every time we had Danish Aebleskivers, and now I make it all the time for my family. It is our FAVORITE!! We don't just use it for Aebleskivers, we use it on pancakes, waffles, french toast...you name it! It is incredibly sweet but incredibly delicious. It's hard to have store bought syrup when you can make this! If you've never tried this syrup, be prepared for your tastebuds to do a little happy dance! BTW...if you don't have buttermilk on hand, you can make a substitute of "sour milk" by pouring about a tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice in the bottom of the measuring cup before adding regular milk - let it sit for about 5 minutes, and presto...you will have curdled milk that works just as well as true buttermilk. I rarely buy buttermilk and always use this method. I actually do it using canned milk. Works like a charm! I do this for every recipe that calls for buttermilk and it has yet to fail me.

My children and I made this when we ran out of syrup. It was a hit. I'll never buy store bought syrup again! My only question is how to store!

The only thing that I did different was put honey in place of the sugar. After trying a couple of different syrups...this is BY FAR our favorite! Even the picky eaters like it. I will not be buying syrup at the store anymore. Would be EXCELLENT for an ice cream topping. It was wonderful on waffles too! Thank you for sharing.. (definatly use a LARGE pot....the bubbles get BIG)

5 stars for ease of making. 3 stars for consistency. I like my syrup to be like "REAL" maple syrup (Grade A is thin & like water) and this was more like a sauce so I added 1/2 cup more buttermilk. I give it 6 stars for its rich, caramel-like flavor. If you don't like real sweet, you won't like this. Although a maple syrup "lover" and purest, I now prefer this. Absolutely delicious!

I love this recipe and make it any time I need syrup. I made it again this morning and did not have any butter,I used organic whole milk in place of buttermilk, and I use honey in place of corn syrup all of the time..It still turned out WONDERFUL!

This stuff is fantastic. Huge hit with the family. Hubby hates syrup, but had 2 helpings of this. I used evaporated milk, as it was all I had. I also added 1 tsp.cinnamon. Definitely a keeper!

oh my gosh... ooey gooey caramely goodness! use a large pot because it bubbles several times it's size and you don't want to waste a drop! (or make a horrible mess) Excellent on pancakes, ice cream, or eaten straight out of the pot with a spoon. Oh wait, did I say that? :)

This is so good, we especially like it on whole wheat pancakes. I do omit the soda, though, I have made it both ways and definitely prefer w/o soda. I also use less sugar (I use heaping 1 c. and it was still sweet enough!!)

ummmm.....very disappointed. I wanted to make a "blondie" dessert like the one from Applebee's for my boyfriend. First, I used a large saucepan but this still expanded so much and so quickly that it made a huge mess. After I transferred it, it did cook nicely and turned into a nice drizzly syrup that smelled good. But it hardened into unchewable hard pieces almost as soon as we started drizzling. And it didn't taste that carmely like others said anyway. Ended up not using it and can't imagine putting this on pancakes. grrrrrrrrr

At first, I was only going to give this 4 stars because it is very, very sweet. But, when you add this to your buttermilk pancakes, the taste in the syrup compliments the taste of the pancakes perfectly. This will get 5 stars in my book! Also, when you make this, use a large sauce pan. I used my medium size one, and I was over flowing so I had to dump all the ingredients into my large sauce pan. This will be great to serve to my guests!

This is a delicious syrup although I think the name should be changed to Caramel Buttermilk Syrup. Despite its scrumptiousness, it wasn't exactly what I was expecting. Being the sugar junkie that I am, this was a good thing. My husband doesn't have the sweet tooth that I do and deemed it "alright". The 3 year old liked it mixed with maple syrup. I will be making this again.

I must admit that this syrup is very, very delicious, but it definitley cannot be good for anyone because it is sooooo rich!! For that reason, i give it 4 stars, if there is a lighter version to this, it would be a 5 star recipe.
