Buttermilk Cocoa Cake
SUBMITTED BY:
Gaylene Anderson
"Moist and tender with a delightful frosting, this cake is one I've made time and again after finding the recipe in an old community cookbook. It's perfect for a family dinner, picnic or potluck."

I'm afraid this is worth only 2 stars. It is more sweet than chocolaty, and the frosting was very runny. I had to chill it for an hour before it was of "spreading" consistency. I think, maybe by adding 1 or 2 1oz. bars of a good quality bittersweet chocolate, melted, may improve the cake. It was, however, very moist.

Wow! I don't like cake very well--I'll say it right off--but I had too much buttermilk and was desperate to use it! Let me just say my boyfriend adored me for making this cake. It was delicious--didn't taste sour from the buttermilk at all! It was perfectly fluffy and chocolatey. I did add extra cocoa to the batter, as per recommended, and I'm very glad I did. Also, I saw another review poked holes in her cake--so I just went ahead and took a knife and went to town. Also it may have sacrificed the looks a little (the chocolate frosting filled the holes well so they weren't that visible) the pay off was worth it! The frosting sank down into the cake and made it amazing! Will make this again!

This recipe is one of my favorites! I love it and it is great hot or cold. We have been making it for years. The only difference between my recipe and yours is that you sift the flour and then resift it with the salt and sugar. Also, when making the frosting, my recipe calls for 6tsp of milk rather than 1/2 cup. You add the milk 2 tbs at a time until desired consistancy. This cake is very sweet. Everyone in our family loves it. Chocolate lovers dream!!

This cake was sooo awesome! It was a big hit with my roommates & classmates. I will def make it again. My only problem was I had little clumps of flour in the batter even after mixing it throughly--I'm a novice baker. Does anyone know how to avoid this problem?

This recipe rocks! My husband and I couldn't stop eating it and all the while he kept saying what a great baker he'd married. Best chocolate cake ever.
