On technicality, it should be a 4 for being called a bread... this is basically a cake dressed as bread. =) Absolutely wonderful chocolate flavor. Here's something I added to enhance the chocolate flavor: 1 tsp instant coffee dissolved in 1 T hot water. Threw in a handful of chocolate chips... then decorated the top with a drizzle of white chocolate. Over the top decadence you wouldn't necessarily expect from this recipe!

If you're looking for a rich flavored bread/cake, consider adding a bit of molasses and a dash of cinnamon. If you're looking for a chocolatey bread/cake, you'll need to replace the nuts with chocolate chips (I used regular-size semi-sweet chips) and consider adding a teaspoon of vanilla. Don't add cinnamon if you're looking for chocolate, since it distracts from what little chocolate flavor there is. This "bread" (more like a dense cake) isn't what you need if you're looking for a chocolate fix, but it is delicious. I went with my suggested chocolate suggestions above (chips and vanilla) and ate it without the spread. Chocolatey enough to enjoy, but not a chocoholic's dream. Without the chips it wouldn't have really tasted much like chocolate...just a very rich, dark-flavored bread (they help bring out the mild chocolate flavor in the bread).

This was so amazing! I used only 1/2 the margarine, and subbed the rest with applesauce. Also I added a cup of chocolate chips. It turned out perfectly rich, moist, and delicious. It was gone in two days at our house!!! I did not like the honey butter though, and I definitely don't think it needs it, especially if you add the chocolate chips. This is definitely a keeper!

This is a great, simple recipe. I'm not very fond of baking but this was a pleasant surprise. Next time I might try adding chocolate chips, or apple sauce, as other reviewers have stated. My only complaint was the consistency of the honey butter, it didn't mix together very well for me at all, but still tasted good with the bread anyway. Thanks for this recipe, it will definitely be something to share with my family on the holidays!

The bread turned out great, I subbed dark chocolate chunks instead of the nuts, which made for a very rich, velvety bread. I didn't like the honey/chocolate/butter spread as much, but mostly because I don't like honey. This is worth a repeat try, but I might make a nutella based spread instead!

This bread is awesome, very moist and chocolaty. However, it is almost more of a cake than bread. The chocolate butter is also very tasty. Thanks for sharing the recipe!

A big hit at home! I always try to sneak in some fiber for my kids somewhere and this recipe was perfect for it. The changes I made; added 1 cup all-bran and let it softened with about 1 1/4 cup skim milk with 1 T vinegar milk instead of 1 cup buttermilk, used canola oil instead of butter, used 1 cup all purpose flour and 1/2 cup wheat, couple dashes of cinnamon, 1/3 cup mini chocolate chips. Baked at 325 for 1 hr 15-20 min. I may try adding shredded zuchinni next time instead of extra milk.

Fantastic! I love baking with buttermilk - I use the lowfat/reduced fat version with great results. I did not use the chocolate honey butter, but I might try it when I make this again. This baked up beautifully - I did not use pecans but opted to toss in slightly more than 1/4 cup of chocolate chips. Loved it! Thank you for the recipe.

Made this last night for some friends and it was a hit. Not too sweet, not too chocolate-y, just right. Butter and margarine are very expensive here in China so I substituted 1/3 C oil and it was still very, very good. Definitely didn't need the honey butter.

We all loved this bread!!! BTW, I doubled the recipe to make 2 loaves. Didn't have buttermilk so substituted 2 Tbsp. of lemon juie plus enough skim milk to make 2 cups. Added 2/3 cup mini chocolate chips. Didn't make the chocolate honey butter (don't think it needs it really). Overall an easy recipe to make. I'll definitely be making this again soon!!!!

This was so delicious!! I made mini loaves and muffins out of this, and used them as Christmas gifts instead of cookies. Everyone loved them. I used mini chocolate chips with them since not everyone likes nuts. They were fabulous. I will certainly make them again!

Very good, not too sweet. Didn't add the nuts or make the spread (no time). Kids liked it with powdered sugar. Also good with ice cream.

Wonderfully moist bread! Thanks for the yummy recipe! I made the following tiny changes: subbed applesauce for the butter, reduced sugar to ¾ cup, added 1 tsp. of vanilla and ½ tsp of cinnamon, used 1/3 cup of mini-chocolate chips instead of pecans.
