I made this tonight for my son's birthday cake. I needed to add a little more sugar and then milk and vanilla to cut the crisco taste. It turned out great though.

I used this for my DS frog birthday cake and it turned out wonderful! It is a little sweet tasting, but I think that's the way it is supposed to be. Great for decorating and very easy to whip up! Thanks for the great recipe!

This has been my go to frosting recipe for years. We've noticed recently, that since the "no trans fat" trend, Crisco changed their formula and this frosting doesn't come out the way it used to. I'm going to try the all butter version today to see if that helps with the consistency and spreading problems we've been having. Otherwise, I'm going to have to find a new recipe after 20 years of using this one.

Okay - let me just say i'm never going back to Royal Icing again! Well - at least not any time soon. I am attempting to learn how to do some cake decor - flowers, leaves, etc. Royal icing was so hard to work, so I tried this as suggested in the Recipe exchange. This icing was so simple to make, and easy to experiment with. I think I've found a winner! Tastes great too.

This is a great base recipe! I used all butter, as I hate that waxy taste of shortening, as well as three tablespoons whipping cream. Added half lemon/half vanilla extract for a little kick. Would definitely do again.

I used the tip about using hot water with a dash of salt, 4 cups of powdered sugar and one cup of butter instead of shortening. I was tickled to find that one recipe frosted three batches of cupcakes (I frosted them by hand)!! I really thought I would have to make at least two batches of frosting. I will use this recipe again. Thank you!

Very good icing. I even fourthed the recipe because I only needed a little and it worked well. I used all butter and it was partly melted and worked great.

I love this recipe. Every time I've made something with it, I receive dozens of compliments. I've referred many people to this website to get the recipe for themselves! Really easy to make, even for the non-baker.

YUM! Although I used ALL butter and 7 cups sugar and it is SWEET ENOUGH! Tastes great on my Red Velvet cupcakes!

I made this icing for some cupcakes that I made for the kids. I used all butter and only added 3 cups of powdered sugar (which I thought was plenty) and used heavy cream instead of milk and added a little extra to get the consistency that I wanted. The kids loved it and the cupcakes disappeared quickly.

Good recipe, used all butter (no shortening) and it tasted great. Found piping it onto to the cupcakes a bit tough but maybe I should workout more!!

The buttercream icing was great but with 3 1/2 cups of sugar was really sweet so I just didn't use the other 1/2 cup and it was on point.

I took others reviewers advice and used only butter. The key is to mix on high to get it to blend into icing. I put all the sugar in at once as well. I used all 4 cups of sugar and it was sweet. I love sweet, but this is too much for me, will make it again but only use 3 cups

I love this recipe. It's the one I turn to whenever I need to make a cake, cupcakes or cookies. Everyone loves it. I usually use less powdred sugar than is called for though, or it is way too sweet.

I was looking for a cake and icing recipe to make for my nephews sons' graduation party. I made a cake with this icing. I loved it. I found a recipe that takes one box Duncan Hines white cake mix and add a box of Jello White Chocolate pudding. I made the cake by the directions and just added the dry pudding mix with a 1/2 c. water. The cake is fabulous. I had my neice (mother of grad)come over and try yet another cake, and she went nuts. She loved it. She stated "this is the cake, this is the one, you can stop looking for recipes. The icing is fabulous. It goes great with the cake. It all just melts in your mouth. Oh I'm in heaven. This is the best cake I've ever had." And the grad himself even tried it and loved it. I sent half the cake home with them and they were fighting over who was carrying the cake as they were going out the door. LOL. Well you have made all of us very happy. I get to quit baking bad cakes with so-so to nasty icing and my nephews son knows he is getting a fabulous cake for his grad party. Thanks so much. This was a life saver.

Typically I don't review recipes if I change ingredients, but I had to this time! This was the yummiest buttercream I've ever made!! These were my changes - only butter, Silk instead of milk, and a little bit of marishino cherry juice. Yu-hu-hum! Half a recipe is more than enough to frost 6 jumbo cupcakes, so I would assume 12 regular ones.

I prefer this recipe with butter only, I didn't get all of the 4 cups of sugar in it. I agree with using heavy cream instead of milk. It gave it a much smoother consistency. I love the flavor. I made my cake and ate the rest of the frosting on graham crackers. Makes a great treat for the kids!

Very good icing for what it is....super easy to make! I used only 3 cups of sugar (no need to beat after each cup) and doubled the amount of vanilla. The end result was perfect for icing mini valentine cupcakes for my son's daycare!
