INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups self-rising flour*
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup butter (no substitutes), melted
  • all-purpose flour

DIRECTIONS

  1. In a bowl, combine the self-rising flour, sugar and milk; mix well. Turn onto a floured surface; sprinkle with all-purpose flour. Pat dough to 1/2-in. thickness. With a sharp knife dipped in flour, cut into 3-in. x 2-in. pieces. Pour butter into an ungreased 13-in. x 9-in. x 2-in. baking pan. Dip one side of each piece into melted butter. Carefully turn to coat. Bake, uncovered, at 450 degrees F for 10 minutes or until golden brown.

As a substitute for each cup of self-rising flour, place 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a measuring cup. Add all-purpose flour to measure 1 cup.

I'll be honest, I never thought this recipe was going turn out well, the dough was sticky and the thought of no butter inside the biscuit was unappealing, and the only reason I tried it was that my usual biscuit recipe needs to be babied and I felt like being lazy. I was severly wrong and I wholeheartedly admit it, as these were very tasty. Made 2 changes, cut the sugar in half and added 1/2tsp salt, and when the biscuits were finished baking I basted them with more melted butter. Thank you for the simple and delicious recipe.

Yes, Jessica , you don't bake 'em in the butter, you just dip 'em in the butter. Not a bad recipe, btw.

VERY sticky dough, I added what felt like a ton of all purpose flour just to get them off the cutting board after slicing them. I didn't have self-rising flour so I used the tip at the bottom of the recipe. They did rise some, enough to look like a biscuit. They were a bit bland, but with gravy or butter and honey, they are just fine. All in all, a decent recipe for biscuits in a pinch. Thanks!
