reviewed other people's suggestions (thanks for sharing) and was pretty successful the first time, but it was a little too sweet and salty for our taste. after more tweaks the second time, it was on point!
added Lipton onion soup mix. used only 1/2 tsp salt (since using soup mix). KEEP fresh onion. use Progresso garlic and herb bread crumbs instead of saltine crumbs.
1/4 cup brown sugar instead of 1/2 cup
1/8 cup ketchup, 3/8 cup of spicy UFC (Filipino Banana Sauce), 2 tbsp of Worstechire, and many good squirts of Sriracha (adds a nice, slow kick).
use 4/5 of sauce IN MIX (you don't need much to top it later on). bake 50 min. then DRAIN the grease (i'm surprised this wasn't suggested that much. tried using slice bread at bottom but you end up with gooey, soggy mess of grease at the bottom you have to remind people NOT to eat. better just to drain it out). added rest of sauce on top and let it drip down to cover the side of the loaf (should have shrunk by now). bake final 20 min to get nice, almost caramelized crust on top.
