Thanks for the recipe. Didn't get a chance to turn it into a french toast breakfast. Family ate it out of the oven for dinner. The first time you use it in the bread machine, don't use the delayed timer. Instead, watch the dough to see if it needs more or less milk. Should form a smooth, soft ball after kneading. Test the crust setting, it gets dark fast. Record this amount of milk and crust time for the next time. This prevents a dried out or blackened loaf. I found I needed a bit more milk and a medium crust on sweet dough cycle.

The high sugar content resulted in a very dark, overdone crust, even at the lightest setting for my machine. Depending on the machine, you might have to work with the recipe to get a loaf that cooks quickly enough to allow you to remove it early. Aside from the crust, the taste was good.

I have made this bread twice and although it is very good it is not the best I have ever tasted. Both times it came out a little dry. Perhaps next time I will make the dough in the machine, pound it out, braid it and then let it rise and bake in my oven like others below have suggested.

This is the best homemade bread I have ever made. Crispy crust, but soft and moist inside. I added 3/4 cup raisin and it turned out very delicious.

This is was a hit with the kids and adults. Everyone loved it! I did modify it a bit though. Iadded a bit of yellow food coloring and I only used the bread machine through the first rise and then removed it and continued to knead by hand. I braided it, brushed it with egg yolk and water and let it rise again. I baked it at 350 until brown. Excellent. One of the best breads I've ever had!

I have been using this recipe for almost a year and a half. The first time I tasted the challah bread, I almost fell from disbelief that I baked a bread this good! I set my machine to bake it in the early morning hours while I sleep. Adding the three dairy products cold keeps them from spoiling. They reach room temperature by the time the machine starts. And I always substitute butter for margarine!

Wow, great bread. I made some in my bread machine and it turned out fabulous. My family enjoyed it as sandwiches, and also just for snacks. Great Recipe. I did only one additional thing to make sure it turned out. I put the milk in a glass measuring cup in my microwave, for 20 seconds, to bring it up to 80F. I find that this temperature is perfect for the best bread. Thanks for the recipe.

I used butter, not margarine. Great for toast and French bread. The toast is so good, it doesn't require a topping. Made it last night and now it's gone.
