No bread machine needed. Very good bagels. Made some plain and onion bagels and it made the house smell so good.

Made this recipe exactly, but with only 6 bagels. I thought they were a bit too big, so next time I make them, I'll make the 9 and see how that turns out. Tasted great though! EDIT: made with the 9, came out kind of odd looking. Still tasted great, but I'd rather make 6 and have them all big and round!

These were very good bagels. I've made these twice so far, and the only change I have made is to add an extra 1/8 cup water at the beginning because otherwise my bread machine really struggles with the dough. Oh, and I also gave myself a really bad steam burn turning the bagels in the boiling water the first time so watch out!

Wonderful! I did let the dough sit for just a bit before shaping, but other than that, no changes. Perfect. Thank you so much for a great recipe.

Followed recipe exactly except it was easier to divide dough into 8 portions instead of 9. I did find that the bagels were more chewy than I like. Next time, I will let the bagels rise up longer next time and also follow another reader's advice to only boil the dough for about 10 seconds or so and not 1 minute.

WOW!!!! I am now impressed with these bagels! Last week I made them following previous reviewer's suggestion to substitute WW flour and extra water. Well, they tasted good, but were very moist and dense. Today I made them by the original recipe, except: I let the dough rise/rest ~ 25 min before forming the bagels; I let them rise 20 min once formed into bagels; I made a dozen mini bagels, which is what we prefer. I may even make another batch to take to the beach next week!

It may not be fair for me to review this recipe, as I made quite a few changes, but it was definitely the inspiration for my version. I made this in my KitchenAid, not a bread machine, and let the yeast + water + sugar sit for 10 minutes before adding the flour. I subbed in 1 cup of whole wheat flour for the white flour and upped the water by 1/4 cup to compensate. Finally, I added in several 30-minute rising sessions since whole wheat flour takes longer to rise. Glazed with an egg white + a drop of heavy cream and then sprinkled with sesame seeds, these were absolutely divine.

I made these bagels for the first time this afternoon and they turned out wonderful! I wanted to go for a little cinnamon-raisin action so I added 1 tablespoon cinnamon and about 2/3's cup raisins during the dough cycle. I boiled 15 seconds on each side per another reviewer's suggestion and then after the egg wash I sprinkled cinnamon and sugar over the tops... YUMMY! I live in East Asia and I thought these were very reminiscent of Panera's "Cinnamon Crunch Bagels." I'll definitely be making these again.

I wanted more bagels so I increased the servings to 12 since my bread machine can handle 4 cups of flour. It worked great! After coating with the egg we topped them with cinnamon-sugar, garlic salt & onion flakes, sesame seeds, extra sharp grated cheddar cheese. Every one of the combos was popular and worked well. Note: I let them rise longer than the recipe states before boiling them.

These do work SO perfectly, I don't change a thing except I make 8 large bagels instead of 6 gianormous ones. When the dough comes out of my bread machine I shape them and pop them into a warm (not hot) oven for 10 minutes while the water boils and they rise even more. Just as good as any bakery, and way cheaper!

These were so easy to make in the bread machine and they fun to make (I got a kick out of twirling them on my finger). They are not pretty, but they taste like a bagel should and I think my kids will go crazy for them. Thanks for sharing.

These make the BEST bagels I have ever had. I have been using this recipe for at least 2 years. I usually follow it exactly and have never had a problem. When you finally finish them and get to eat one fresh with cream cheese on it is so rewarding.

Ohhh my gosh!! These were outstanding! Very chewy and good. I substituted 1 cup of the bread flour for whole wheat flour to make them a little healthier. My kids loved them and keep asking for more. Thanks for the recipe!

I just got done making these and they are sooooo good. I did make a few changes though...first I did not use a bread machine...I also added 1 T. cinnamon and about 1 cup of "plumped" raisins to them. The turned out great! I had never made bagel before, so didn't know what to expect, but it was surprisingly easy. I definately recommend this to all!!! Thanks for the great recipe!

i only boil them for 10 sec each side ...been making these for 2 years now come out great every time ...i found that cutting down on the boiling time makes the bagel not stick to your teeth....it is more soft and less chewy....great basic recipe can easily add dried fruit or japs and cheddar cheese for variety of bagel flavors....thanks for this great recipe!!!

AMAZING!!! These bagels were so delicious and so easy! Everyone was so impressed with them-- probably because making bagels sounds so intimidating! I used my Kitchenaid mixer for the dough instead of my bread machine, and after the dough was done, I folded 3/4 cup of shredded cheddar cheese and 5 cloves of minced garlic into the dough before shaped them and let them rise again. Absolutely DELICIOUS with cream cheese! I will be making these again and trying other flavors, blueberry and cinnamon raisin are next! Thanks for the great recipe!

This recipe was absolutely amazing. We moved from Upstate New York several years ago and miss fresh bagels. We topped some with salt/garlic/onion/poppyseed and others filled with dried cherries and topped with cinnamon sugar.

Really good. I did 1c of whole wheat flour and 2 c bread flour, and they were still really yummy. I may try more WWF next time. I let them rise 30 minutes and boiled them longer per other reviews. So easy - and the kids loved them too. I will probably try making bagel chips with them too sometime.
