Good recipe...but I learned a long time ago that when soaking the beans overnight, toss the water that the beans soaked in and rinse the beans thoroughly under cold water -- that eliminates the "gas-causing" effect of some beans. Just a suggestion...

These are great sticking with the recipe, but I made a couple of modifications – get rid of the water the beans are cooked in, double the liquid part of the recipe and add a Sam Adams Boston Lager. These are simply AMAZING. I’ve made them like this 3-4 times. With smoked brisket and home-made bread – everything is gone fast!

Great baked bean recipe! Like some of the other reviewers I worried that the sauce was enough to cover the beans. When you mix it all together it's a very light brown color and very soupy, but as it cooks it gets nice and dark and thickens. Nice recipe and it smell wonderful!!

I followed the recipe exactly except for the bacon. I added no bacon and it was very good the first night. I do not think it froze well as the leftovers were not very good, but hey, if you can use up the recipe at one meal it is great!

These Beans were Great! I followed the recipe except rather than baking them I put them in the crock pot. I tripled the recipe so that I could have left overs. But we ended up taking them to my nieces birthday party the next day. They were a huge hit and went well with bbq pork. This is a keeper. Thank You AJRHODES3

I was in a hurry and had to use canned pinto beans instead and it was great! I cooked the bacon and onions together in one pan and made the sauce in another. I rinsed and drained the pinto beans, mixed them with the bacon, onions and sauce and it tasted great!

This was my first time making beans from scratch. I think they turned out great. I made them for a BBQ and came home with not much left. I made a double batch.

This have good flavor, the only thing that I changed was making sure that the bacon was fried up first, to be able to keep it low-fat. I also added some hamburger to liven up the flavor, too. I like my beans on the sweeter side so I also added a bit more brown sugar. You could also sweeten up the beans by adding a bit of maple syrup. I was embarassed by how many people asked for the recipe at a large get together recently. There just beans, but a huge, huge hit.

I'm not a fan of canned beans at all, so was on the hunt for a homemade bean recipe that didn't start with a can of baked beans. This is a really great recipe, and super easy. I like foods that have a bit of heat to them, and about 1/2 tsp of Chipotle Chili Powder proved to be a great addition.

These were tasty. The recipe was a bit time consuming, but it's a good recipe. My family has a lot of food allergies, so this is the only way they can eat baked beans -- homemade.

Excellent bean recipe. I forgot the brown sugar and found it plenty sweet enough, with great flavor. I only had time to bake the beans for 1 1/2 hours, I think with another hour or so they would have been perfect. Great recipe, thank you for sharing!

I recently made this recipe for my daughter's and son's 13th and 5th birthday parties as a side. The only thing I did differently was buy the beans precooked in a jar, but followed the recipe for the rest of it. The beans turned out fantastic, and everyone loved them! Thank you so much for this recipe, I will be using it again for my boyfriends twins 5th birthday party and I'm sure it will be a success again!

These were good but too salty for our taste. My guests ate them but no one really commented so I'm not sure if they liked them or not. Also, I wouldn't say they were a lot of work but making them was certainly very time consuming. I was disappointed because I expected them to taste so much better than canned but they didn't. Not really worth the effort then, in my opinion.
