DIRECTIONS
Make the dipping sauce: Combine mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish, paprika, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1 dash black pepper, and 1 dash cayenne pepper in a small bowl and refrigerate it until needed.
Beat egg and combine it with milk in a bowl large enough to hold the onion. In another bowl, combine flour, salt, cayenne pepper, black pepper, garlic powder, thyme, oregano, and cumin.
Prepare the onion: cut approximately 3/4 to 1 inch off of the top and bottom of the onion, remove skin. Remove the 1-inch diameter core from the middle of the onion. Using a large, sharp knife, slice down the center of the onion about 3/4 of the way down, turn 90 degrees and slice again. Keep slicing the sections in half, being careful not to cut to the bottom, until you have 16 sections. Spread the petals apart to make coating easier.
Dip the onion in the milk, then coat well with the flour mixture. Separate the petals again and sprinkle the flour mixture between them. Once you have coated all of the petals well, dip it into the milk and into the flour mixture again. Place in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes while you preheat the oil.
Pour enough oil to cover the onion into a deep fryer or deep pot. Preheat the oil to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Fry the onion right side up in the oil for 10 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oil and let drain in a rack or paper towels. Open the center of the onion wide so that you can put the small bowl of dipping sauce in the center.

if you slice the onion and then soak it in ice water for about an hour it will "bloom" or open up so you can serve it like the Chilis and Outback do. The souce is great.

This is by far the best blooming onion I have ever had. I am now using this recipe for mushrooms and zucchini as well.

This is an excellent recipe. Not only does it make a great "blooming onion", but it also makes great onion rings, if you prefer them. And it makes good onion petals, too.

To be fair, I think my onion was too small. The dip is delicious and will use it on other things.

We've always loved onion blooms when we eat out, this is an excellent recipe, tastes just like them. And the sauce is great too! My deep fat fryer doesn't do a whole onion well, so I make rings or petals instead, and get raves every time!

After seeing a commercial on TV for the Outback Steakhouse, I got a craving for their Bloomin' Onion. This recipie was absolutely perfect! I made onion rings based on others' reviews, so it was easy and delicious! The dipping sauce is also just what I was looking for. My boyfriend wants to keep it around for dipping other foods, too. Thanks!

This was very good...very similar to other blooming onion recipe on this site. Like them both equally. You do need to soak the onion in an ice bath for at least an hour in order for it to actually bloom (like other reviewers suggested). Thanks for the post.

The batter was quick and easy to make. We had some trouble making the onion "bloom" by hand. Instead, we gently opened the onion a little then placed it cut side down into some simmering water for a minute. After, we placed it into an ice water bath for 3 minutes and the onion bloomed nicely. To separate the petals during frying, we also dry dusted the onion with some flour mixed with the same spices the recipe called for, then dipped it into the batter, and ducted again. It took a little more effort, but we definately got an awesome bloom.
