I really liked this recipe - however, I did change a few things due to personal taste (we like salt!): At the beginning, cooked the onion & garlic in olive oil WITH the spices - plus a little bit of fresh chopped cilantro. Used a whole can of veggie broth (had to still add lots of water), and added a generous dousing of salt during cooking, and another dash of cumin & fresh chopped cilantro at the end when I added the drained black beans (used a whole 14.5 oz can here). Though I usually add green & red bell pepper to a recipe like this, I opted out and served it with corn & fresh chopped green & red bell pepper on the side (to kill the spicy aftertaste). I served this with the idea of this other recipe I stumbled upon by "Sara" (also on this site) - Chile Pork. I subbed in cubed pork chop meat and cooked it over the stove, following the rest of her recipe. The three together (Black beans and rice by Robyn Webb, Chile Pork by Sara, and the corn / red & green bell pepper veggie side) were a GREAT combination! Thanks for the recipe - this one is a keeper! Not too spicy, not too bland =)

I really liked this recipe. I'm a vegetarian (and eat dairy and eggs sparingly) my husband is an omnivore so this is one of those things we can all eat. I made pretty much according the the recipe adding a can of drained garlic tomatoes at the end. Then I put the mixture in whole wheat tortillas and topped with cheese for the rest of the family... I ate it twice the first day and then again for lunch the next day and I usually hate leftovers. Yummy.

I really enjoyed this recipe. It's easy and can be made relatively quickly. I substituted chicken broth for the veggie broth. I added some kielbasa and lots of cayenne pepper. Turned out tasty!

When I made this for dinner one night I added sauteed green peppers and threw in a can of diced tomatoes right at the end. The product was a delicious and colorful meal that we ate with a salad on the side.

It was ok - nothing spectacular - quick and easy and cheap - would probably make again but my husband won't eat it.

Sooooo yummy. I've made this twice already. I love it. Mixed it with some apple/chicken sausage and made it dinner. It was great. Thanks for a great recipe.

Good- not quite like my aunt's but good. I like mine a little wetter and found 1.5 cups was nit enough water - i had to add more. I also used brown rice instead of white.

I was looking for a basic beans and rice recipe like what I had when I lived in the Dominican Republic. This was close - I added a red bell pepper with the onions, a few teaspoons of capers and some fresh cilantro at the end.

THis recipe was just so-so. I thought it was quite bland. I doubt I will make it again. It definitely was lacking something.

Our family thought this recipe OK. Not very appealing in appearance and we prefer sausage in with the beans and rice.

Wow - this was much better than I expected it to be. I usually make my rice in a rice cooker, but followed the directions for this recipe and was not disappointed. I served it with fajitas and roasted kernal corn, and it was a hit. In fact, I abandoned my fajitas and just ate beans and rice with some corn stirred in. It was just what I was looking for - thanks!

I thought this was a good recipe. I did have to add more chicken broth while the rice was cooking, but otherwise it was good and very easy.

Thanks for the much needed new idea for a side dish. I made it with 1 can of drained kidney beans, but otherwise followed the recipe and it was delicious. The cumin gave it a really nice flavour.
